How is Seat Post Length Measured?

Thought it was about time I got a longer seat post for the MTB as I've been using it a few cm beyond the recommended minimum insertion for quite a while now.
Diameter is easy enough (and I think it is stamped on the side anyway) but I have no idea how long it is, so don't want to order one that ends up being the same size.
Do you start right at the bottom of the post, or start from the recommended minimum insertion marker?

That makes my seat post approx 400mm - the longest size I've found for sale. Can't imagine my bike came with such a long post as standard.
It also includes 50+mm of post that is beyond the min insertion lines, so you're buying a fair amount of pole you can't necessarily use (I know it's only a guideline).

Oh and your frame might not be too small, lots of factors other than seat post length determine best frame size and even then it's still a compromise.
