Hi Guys,

My fiance and i have recently bought a fish tank and stocked it up with a few fish. The Issue we are having is that after a couple of days the tank starts to become less and less easy to see into.
To try and solve the problem we completely changed the water and gave the tank a good wash but after a couple of days it has started to cloud up again.

Is it the filter?

Any advice gratefully received,

Cheers

Are there any fish in there at the moment, as that's generally a bad idea.

In addition how did you cycle the tank? what are can you tell us what your readings are for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? are you using dechlorinator in new water you're adding to the tank? a complete water change and and tank clean was almost certainly not a good plan.

It is 28 litres, it is an aquastart 320 and the filter came in the box with it. It is a coldwater tank with only 4 fish in it and we usually empty half of the tank and refill with water once a week.

We de-chlorinate the water we put in.

Its our first tank (hence lack of knowledge) so we have got a starter sort of one.

3 fish are less than 2 1/2 inches long and one is less than 5 inches long.

It is 30cm wide x 38cm high x 33cm deep.

I feed tetra pond fish food flakes, in small amounts about 4 times a day.

Your feeding them too much, once a day is adequate.

Im going to say its overstocked and over fed I think.

A fish of five inches is way to big for a tank of that size.

Old school stocking rates of 1" per gallon also put you as over stocked.

As a guide on feeding, I feed once a day and NOT on Saturdays at all.

Okay thank you very much i shall remove the big one and reset my feeding routine.

Thanks to everyone for your advice smile

How often do you have the light on? I had mine on all the time and found it was getting cloudy so left it off for most of the day (fish don't need bright light to see) and the problem was resolved.

Also live plants help keep the water clean, much better than plastic ones.

Thanks ever so much for that link it has answered all of our problems. It turns out we may have knocked our bacterial colonisation of the tank back a bit but we will be sure to get back on track now.

Thanks again.

The tank is far too small basically and you will certainly be causing water quality problems. You need to get a drop testing kit and monitor the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. You haven't specified what type of fish you have just that they are cold water fish. I'm guessing they're goldfish of somekind? If they're fancy goldfish then the stock you have should be in a minimum of 200 litres and if they're common goldfish then they will need an even larger tank as they are pond fish really and are not really suitable for tanks.

As said above over feeding i think is main problem plus changing 50% of the water is maybe a bit to much 10-20% each week is normal.

Best thing to do is cut down the feeding a small pinch each day, and maybe a day off every two weeks.

As for tank size, sounds a little small, and here is the tough thing about fish keeping, smaller tanks are in many ways much harder to keep than large ones. My first tank was tough, lots of problems, whereas my 300 litre tank is a walk in the park in comparison.

Thing is a 28l tank isn't really suitable for keeping ANY fish. Maybe a few white cloud mountain minnows? Unless you get a bigger tank you'll continue having problems and the fish will suffer.
