I have a very basic question which I'm hoping someone can give me a quick & simple answer to. You see, I'm a video camera newbie

I was recently bought a Panasonic NV-GS50 video camera. It has all the usual connectors, plus a tiny DV socket, which looks like miniature Firewire.

What I want to do is shoot some footage, then load it onto the PC to edit - what do I need in terms of cables? Am I right in thinking I just need a mini-to-standard size Firewire lead, whack that into my PC's standard Firewire port, then replay my DV tape to be captured in Windows movie maker?

I tried using an old Hauppage card to capture analogue, but the quality was terrible. What I want to check is that I don't need something like one their special DV capture cards. If I can get away with 1 cable and a copy of something like Premiere or Vegas Video, I'll be happy

All help most appreciated!

yup, if you already have a FW port, connect the cam and turn on, the pc should see the cam straight away.

i would suggest a large amount of RAM and pinnacle studio 8

Try Windows Movie Maker 2 to start - it's free and does a reasonable job. Should automatically recognise the video if you connect via Firewire.

Windows XP makes this a lot easier, just plug it in and use the inbuilt software

Just little things like 5.1 surround sound and 16:9 widescreen support...
