Just thought i'd make you all aware of a scam email i received from 'Barclays' on Friday.

Here is the content of the email:

"Dear Customer

We recently reviewed your account, and suspect that your Barclays Online Banking account may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party. Protecting the security of your account is our primary concern. Therefore, as a preventative measure, we have temporarily limited access to sensitive account features.

To restore your online banking access, we developed a new secure way that keeps your banking safe, we have attached a form to this email to complete this process. Please download the form and follow the instructions on your screen. If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporary suspend your account.

Thanks you for your patience as we work together to protect your account.

Sincerely,
Barclays Online Bank Customer Service.

  • Important*
Please update your records on or before 48 hours, a failure to update your records will result in a temporary hold on your funds"

I immediately thought this was a bit fishy, as they stated temporary instead of temporarily, so i contacted Barclays by phone to confirm that my account was in good order and that this email was not genuine.

Beware!

Well it's the first one i've received, and if someone reads this who hasn't seen one before, i'd be happy. Thanks for your input though.

Take it from me, Barclays do not send e-mails out to their online banking customers.

The trick for a novice is never ever open a link on an email from your bank just in case. Open a new window in your broswer and type in the address yourself. That way you can't get done.

The act of viewing this thread triggered a phishing warning from my virus scanner.

No bank would contact you via email & you would have to be pretty stupid to fall for this. Thanks for the heads up though as many people are silly enough to fall for this.

If you need that level of protection on the net you shouldn’t be allowed to use a computer.

if you don’t, then turn it off it must drain system resources like a bi*ch!

I copied and pasted directly from the email i received from these scammers, so i hope there isn't a problem with it?

An AV which can detect phishing attempts parses the text in the first post and recognises it for what it is, that's all - no dodgy code, just a poor attempt at social engineering.
