I need to change my Engine Coolant Temperature sensor on a 94 1.8 as mine is playing up and not triggering the cooling fan properly - from checking out Rod grainger's manual it seems either the coil pack or cam angle sensor need to come off to gain decent access. I have a CAS O-ring so could replace that at the same time if the CAS is the best one to remove. It sounds fiddly but doable if all the positions are marked for refitting.

Can anyone confirm which of these is easiest to do for a novice and which clears the most space to change the ECT sensor?

Coil pack is only two bolts, iirc your probably going to have to remove both.

Change the o-ring while your at it as you say. The coil pack will unclip fro
The harness and then lift out the way once unbolted. Remember to mark or photograph your plug leads so you know where to put them back.

Did it today, unbolting the coil pack and sliding out the way was enough. Touch wood, I have solved all my problems with the cooling system nowcool
