Alas car selling time...

The classic line above, how often do they..?

Would rather they just said no there and then.

Sold the ST back in April.

Bloke and his lady came to see the car about midday. They seemed happy but said they would go away, talk about it and give me a bell.

I thought nothing of it and wished them on their way.

About 4pm I get a text asking if they could come and see the car again, after which they bought it there and then.

It can happen.

I did it when buying a new car and then went back and bought it a couple of days later - did actually have other cars to look at. Dunno if it's the same with used cars.

Thats what I always say when I have no intention of buying the car. All though someone once came to view my old Honda CRX then said they were going out for a meal. I presumed they had gone back to Swansea. But they knocked on my door at 10.30 that night and handed over the cash. Weired.

it does happen but more often than not it is there way of saying "Not what I expected or... not for what your asking for it, you must be having a laugh" when they aren't the sort of people to speak their minds

are you powerfully built with a goatie?

I usually go out to look at several cars in a day, maybe not even the same make or model - so if you're first, you won't see my money until I've exhausted all the choices before I get fed up.

More often than not, I end up back at the first one as I have subliminally put that first to see as it looks best but other times, it's a distance thing. I do like to have a choice before splurging lots of money. Only if I'm so blown away, I'm sure the "first to see will buy" will I buy on the spot but not many cars (bar my own wink )fall into this category.

Therefore it is often not possible to say yes or no straight away unless I hate it instantly.

I've said that when buying cars. I went away, had a think, then rang them the day after with the good/bad news.

Rubbish. Says more about you than the general car buying public, in my opinion.

'going away to think about it' is a perfectly acceptable thing for somebody contemplating handing over significant amounts of cash to a stranger, to want to do.

I have said that as a buyer once, I genuinely wasn't sure about the car so told the chap I would let him know. I decided that I didn't want the car so rang him up to say, pointless maybe but I felt I ought to.

I always sell my cars for a little less than I think they are worth, to get it over and done with quickly. thats worth a few % of the sale value to me...

People are too quick to judge 'time wasters', they've took the time to come and see the motor and perhaps it isn't quite what they wanted; not their first choice of colour or saw a few marks they weren't happy about, maybe even seller's location. At least they turned up, not everyone is expected to buy a car just because you have come to view it.

I did this when I bought my 172, young lad wasn't best happy as he assumed I was a timewaster. He was a bit happier when I rang him back a day or two later to break the good news.

I agree.

I sold a car to a bloke who slept on it and rang me the following day to say he would take it.

Sold with a Pistonheads advert too cool

There is the other side of the coin too.
"I'm interested in the car you have for sale, can I come and see it?"
"Erm, well, er, I've got someone coming to see it at 5 o'clock tomorrow"
"I understand but I can come and see it today and you might not sell it tomorrow"
"Thing is I don't like to let them down..."
"I admire your principles and hope they pay off. Goodbye".

More often than not when people say they are going to think about it or sleep on it they don't come back. Fair enough really since its a big purchase but for those who say it but really they already know they dont want the car then I wish they would just say so. I have plenty of experience in these matters being a car salesman n'all.
