Chrome surrounds for speed dials etc

I was thinking yesterday, surrounding my Speedo, Rev count etc there is a thing chrome ring all the way around.

Does anyone else think this is a bad design, especially at night, every street light creates what fels like a warning light coming on in the corner of the eye. Every time it doesn't fail to mak me glance down to ensure that no light has in fact come on.
Anyone else bothered by this or just me?
