MOT Failure :(

Hi All,

After being sat in the garage for the last 9 months I decided to get my S3 back on the road.

I took it to be MOT'd at the local garage and, as the title says, it failed.

Biggest problem is it failed the emission test.

Not sure of the actual details, i.e. whether it's way out or just a bit, but does anybody know what could cause this and how it can be fixed.

Appreciate any advice...

Give it a good service, check the plugs leads, air filter etc. This can make the car run smoother and reduce emissions. Also check Air flow meters are operating correctly (unless you have a S3C when you won't have AFM). If that is all done and you still have an issue it may be running rich, the mixture can be adjusted by use of the screw in the AFM, but I'd suggest you get the garage to check and set this correctly.

I had the same issue on my first MOT and a small tweak of this screww on the correct machinery to set the mixture and it dropped by over 50% on emmissions

Mine failed on the same issue - the mechanic took it for a good run, got the engine up to full operating temp, and it passed!

It could be a LOT Worse than that - i.e chassis failure!!

I echo the above - in 2010 the car went in straight from winter lay up & failed on emissions - it took them a couple of hours to get it sorted using the AFM adjustment.

In 2011 the car had been on a couple of runs before the MOT, then on the morning I took it on a long run to get it all up to temperature - passed with no issues.
