I have previously looked at buying an M5 Saloon and came very close to purchasing a 55 plate last year. Since the arrival of baby number 1 and realising that you can never travel light, I ended up settling for an A4 Avant. I have never shook off the M bug and now have been looking at the M5 touring.

Below is one I may look at, any comments would be appreciated especially on the wheels. I think i would prefer the standard M5 wheels but maybe these have to be seen in the flesh.

As i said any comments would be great and any pointers as to what to look for also would be good.

Personally I would be paying a couple of grand more for a BMW main dealer vehicle for the peace of mind of the BMW warranty. I was only looking last night at M5 touring prices and thinking they have to be one of the best used performance vehicles on the Market. Less than 28k gets you into a warranted v10 classy estate.

Yeah i totally agree with what your saying. However i have looked into BMW's extended fully comp warranty and it works out about £80 a month... as i was told when i was looking before you would be crazy to own an M5 without it..

I could not see the advert, but I would not buy an E61 M5 without a BMW Warranty. I would not look at an after market warranty as an alternative either. While the mechanicals are super strong and over-engineered, the rest of the car is too modern and complicated to be run without a comprehensive warranty. I would also shy away from cars without full leather on the dashboard and alcantara headlining as the plastics/fabrics used in the E60/E61 are crap compared to the E39/E46...

It took me 8 months till I found the right one. Paid 31k but I got a full front end re-spray and 2 years BMW warranty thrown in for a 31k miles car. I would also shy away from a higher mileage cars unless you can see that the clutch has been done and that is not due a big service. There is a 30k mile car with BMW for £30,850 which is the same spec as mine. I don't think you will be disappointed...

Yeah, not bad, but lack of leather and BMW warranty are a definite turn off. Trust me, the leather/alcantara combo make the car a MUCH nicer place to live in. Also I guess they may make it easier to move on when the time comes.

Also, remember, when you purchase BMW warranty, it would not kick in straight away, but after a month. And on a high mileage car you will have to go with the pay monthly option, otherwise, once you go over 60k, the costs get silly...

Remember the phrase 'a fool and his money etc', I think this should be changed to read 'a fool doesnt get an M5 as a bmw AUC car'

I have now run 2 e60 m5 and wouldnt say they were unreliable, its just that repairs/maintenance costs are super car expensive and the AUC warranty saves you a fortune.

Beward 3rd party alternatives, they are claim limited and really arent good enough for a car of this type.

My advice, save a bit more or haggle harder and buy from BMW.

Are they M6 wheels? Why would you change the wheels on a car like that?

Is there a difference between buying from BMW and paying for the Comprehensive warranty??

They were an OEM option on the M5, so technically not M6 wheels! They're actually a slightly different fitment on the M5.

No there is not, apart from the fact that if the warranty has lapsed, it takes 30 days from the day you buy a new one to actually kick in. Thus you will motor around in a car, which costs £1000s to fix for a month with no cover...

If you get the monthly payment warranty then the price won't change after the 60k mile mark. Loophole!

I wasnt aware that you could buy a BMW warranty on a car that wasnt supplied under the AUC scheme. Doesnt mean you can't though smile
