328, cheaper to run for just about everything.

M3 more expensive to buy, er but faster? M3 getting a little chavy as the price has dropped? Great cars though just couldn't be on with the running costs as a daily.

Could people please stop fking recommending 328is? I've been looking for one for months and they're all either barried or falling to bits. The daily 328i thread is not helping grumpy

If you've got £2k, a nice 328i m-sport.
If you've got £6k, a nice M3 Evo.

HTH.

M3 convertible every time. I'm averaging 29.1 mpg [real about 28.7] mixed driving. Faster than it has any right to be, handles like a dream [if fitted with Pirelli Rossos, otherwise not so complete] roadholding on a par with my Maserati 3200, easy to maintain well and about half the price of a reliable 3200. You just have to keep looking and be patient, mine took 7 months to find and missed the early summer as a result, but at just 72k miles [documented] from new she is a classy un-chavved little gem of a car. Even when you get a good one be ready to spend a few weeks tinkering to make perfect, but drive lots of them, listen to them, how they breathe and if they rattle both under the bonnet and across the glass and body. Don't buy anything lowered, don't buy anything owned by a minority group. Look for standard wheels and tyres all the same make or at the very least matching pairs of fr./rr. my M3 vert is a priceless gem to me, smooth as silk, quiet and an absolute, total pleasure to own and drive. She will pull from 1000rpm in sixth without a stumble or belch and will hit 150 with ease in the same gear. Hated beemers for decades but this little marvel has turned my thoughts on their head.

OP, you're more than welcome. I know only a little but there are forums that know so much it boggles the mind! Whatever you buy put aside about £100 for little bits and bobs to make perfect. I gave my ol'girl a full blood transfusion the day after I bought her [fanatical owner habits are impossible to break] a thorough clean with a steamer fed the leather wrapped all the bushes in silicone food, oiled or greased everything that moved, tightened everything that didn't, had a go at make the hood taught [and it worked!!!], cleaned the brakes and basically gave her a make-over paint wise. Spent a day under and around the car and £100 on a mass of fluids/waxes/string [really!] the end result is my car is silent, even over the roughest roads she has not a single rattle from glass or body.

Both great cars - the M3 will be in a completely different league in terms of running costs. I'd go for the 328I.

M car nut here.
There are dozens on here who have forgotten more than I'll ever know on M3's so ask them but surely the real question is evo or non evo.
Those in the know will be able to give you chapter and verse.
