I've noticed for a while that the right hand door speaker was only only working intermittently. Having decided to replace the old Kenwood radio cassette player with something a bit more up to date, I thought I'd investigate the speaker problem whilst I had the head unit out.

The connections at the speaker end looked OK, no corrosion there, and the speaker looked healthy enough, so that left the wiring. My meter showed a break in one core of the speaker wire, somwhere between the head unit and the speaker. The door electrics are connected to into the main wiring loom, via 3 multipin connectors in the driver footwell. I seperated the 2 halves of the relevant connector and established that the cable from the head unit to the connector was sound. So, the problem was either in the connector, or in the door.

Given the intermittent nature of the fault, it took me ages to establish the exact cause of the problem. It transpired that the break in the cable was in the five inch bit that hangs between the door and the doorframe. Obviously years of opening and closing the door had caused the cable to fracture and the fractured halves made intermittent contact. I only hope the other cores of the cable are more durable.

Happily, I'm now enjoying MP3s of all my favourite '70s bands in glorious stereo

I have the same problem although not quite as bad.

How did you get to the wires that run between the door and the frame?

If you pull back the carpet trim on the right hand side of the drivers footwell, you'll find the multipin connectors there.
