TQ3 TRAVEL ALERT – 9TH June 2004

SNCF Rail Workers Plan 11 June Strike: Potentially serious rail disruptions may occur in the coming days as SNCF (French national railway) plans a nationwide strike beginning at 2000 on 11 June 2004 lasting through until 0600 14 June.
The CGT (rail workers union) cut rail electricity supplies without prior notice on 7 June 2004, and threatened further sporadic power blackouts. While power has been restored, the action caused serious disruptions for hundreds of thousands of passengers travelling to and from Paris' St. Lazare station.
The nationwide strike by SNCF railway workers is expected to significantly reduce rail service. TGV and Corail services could be delayed or cancelled as a result of the strike. The strike is also expected to cause disruptions to train services in the Paris suburbs. SNCF workers are seeking accelerated modernisation. The strike scheduled by EDF and GDF (electric and gas workers' unions) for June 11-14 is now overshadowed by today's activities by the CGT. A planned June 15-16 EDF and GDF strike in Paris could also impact rail services if further power cuts occur. The call for EDF and GDF strikes was prompted by anxiety over partial privatisation of the gas and electric sectors. If this affects the travel arrangements of your company, please call your local TQ3 Travel Solutions office for alternatives.
