Heard/saw my first Alfa 8C last night - followed for 5/6 miles, being driven "with spirit".

White soft-top, looked just stunning. Smaller than I would have thought, but I was driving my behemoth.

BUT..... fk me, it has to have the greatest exhaust note I have EVER heard. Mix of Italian V8 screamer, old school racer and Rolls Royce Merlin.

Popping & Banging on overrun and at anything from tickover to high revs, just sounded stellar - and no EU pandering muting in sight. Even from inside my farcially insulated cabin you could feel it, let alone hear it. Certainly looked like standard pipes (2x twin that looked too small to emit such an epic noise)

Sounds far nice than the Ferrari lump is it based on, nicer even than a 1960s Ferrari V12.....nicer than anything - just a perfect blend on everything that is perfect about an exhaust note.

Then he drove through the airport tunnels.

I think I released a bit of sex-wee.

Nice....but still doesn't do it justice compared to real life.

Out of interest, are these engines still flat-plane cranks like the Ferrari, or have Alfa given them cross-plane cranks, hence the more 'traditional' and IMHO better, V8 noise?

Just a thought. I think the engines in modern Maseratis also sound better than the Fezza lumps they're based on.

I don't think so. IIRC it was only the 355's engine that had a flat-plane crank.

The 430 is a flat plane crank, as far as I understand it's basically 2 4 cyl engines sharing the crankshaft.

I agree, the Gran Turismo S sounds far better than the F430 IMO.

Indeed - that said the 458 does sound epic, but still not as bk tingling as the 8C

The Ferrari 458 with standard pipes is without doubt the most disappointing car sound I've ever heard!

I've ridden in an 8c. It is simply the most wonderful sound. It was definately pinned back due to cousins Maserati and Ferrari.

I'm not sure Alfa go that memo with regards to noise regulations...hehe

Boss just got a Maserati GranCabrio and gave me the keys. That thing sounds lovely.

8c is easily one of the best cars of the last decade.

Just a shame it was never really a "production" car.
