Selling one of our cars at the moment and want to keep our Mk1 Golf safe during the winter months. Looking for a car with the following criteria:

- Estate/4x4
- Motorway comfort must be decent
- Big boot (for the dog)
- Plenty of rear seat leg room for either luggage or passengers
- Reliable (well, as long as I won't be replacing bits every month I'm not too worried about this)
- Mpg not vital but would be nice to see it above 30mpg a majority of the time
- A bit of power wouldn't hurt
- A few toys would be nice
- BUDGET - £5k

This is because we borrowed my OH's Dad's W-reg Audi A6 1.8T for a weekend away and it was huge, made me decide a bigger car makes sense with the dog. We also do a few long journeys during the course of the year so motorway comfort would be nice smile

Cheers

haha I wondered how long it would take, unfortunately, not sure I would find a sub 100k miles car within budget with suitable spec?

A mint E39 530i Touring sounds like it would fit the bill nicely.

Isn't this what the Volvo V70 was made for? Not sure on prices but you should be able to get something half decent for £5K, and there's a good range of petrol or diesel engines to suit your budget.

Is there going to be a HUGE difference between the A4 Avant to an A6 Avant? I want enough room for people to sit in the back seat comfortably behind me (6'3") and the dog to be comfortable in the boot.

Sounds like you're describing a Volvo V70. It does everything you ask for.

Failing that, a good E39 would fit in fine.

Audi Allroad! Dirt cheap due to people scared to death about the air springs failing. 55 plate tdi on eBay fully loaded went a couple of days ago for £2700! Better equiped than an A6 avant plus £2k cheaper for same year!

Would agree with Luke ,go for a Subaru Outback or Legacy.
They've huge boots , reliable , go for the 3.0ltr H6 which is the top model so all mod cons , power is 208 bhp old model / 238bhp newer shape ( approx), they will average 30mpg on the motorway , very comfy , and good room in the back , plus it's AWD as a bonus thumbup
