2004-on Range Rover TDV6 advice
Discussion
Hi.
I am trying to gather as much info as possible before changing my wife's car and we quite fancy the idea of a current shape RR amongst others (X5 and XC90 also considered, although 7 seats not a requirement)
Budget is 20-25k which seem to put us in something up to 2006 without intergalactic mileage.
Without including the fuel consumption which according to the wiki on PH seems to hover between 20 and 25mpg and insurance which I've checked already, what else am I to budget for to get the car perfect? Remap? Gearbox service? (I seem to have read somewhere they can cause trouble)
I'm in warwicksire, what good indy could I go and have a chat with if any?
What to look for when I'm ready to buy?
I've tried a search but it's been pretty unhelpful
Thanks for your help.

That's a good budget, and you'll get a main dealer TDV8 for that, maybe not a Vogue Spec, but take this for example:I am trying to gather as much info as possible before changing my wife's car and we quite fancy the idea of a current shape RR amongst others (X5 and XC90 also considered, although 7 seats not a requirement)

Still great spec, only 65k miles, and benefits from the 2007 MY interior facelift. Plenty available at that price, but why not get an approved used if you can?
As Aviz said, check out fullfatrr.com, it's the best forum for the L322. You won't regret buying a Range Rover.

Thats an HSE.....you can get a Vogue for similar money if you search. One with Land Rover warranty would be best.....http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

I think you're getting confused with the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport (FFRR & RRS). The Range Rover has NEVER had the TDV6 fitted to it. Over recent years, here's a summary of the different engines:
(I'm going from memory here, so there maybe the odd omission and also based on the UK market)
The Range Rover has/had the following engines:
2005-2009
3.0 TD6 (Diesel - BMW Straight 6 - Discontinued late 2006)
3.6 TDV8 (Diesel - From late 2006)
4.2 V8 Supercharged (Petrol)
4.4 V8 (Petrol - Up to circa 2006)
2009-Now
3.6 TDV8 (Diesel - Discontinued mid 2010)
4.4 TDV8 (Diesel - From mid 2010)
5.0 V8 Supercharged (Petrol)
The Range Rover Sport has/had the following engines:
2005-2009
2.7 TDV6 (Diesel)
3.6 TDV8 (Diesel - From late 2006)
4.2 V8 Supercharged (Petrol)
4.4 V8 (Petrol - Up to circa 2006)
2009-Now
3.0 TDV6 (Diesel)
3.6 TDV8 (Diesel - Discontinued mid 2010)
5.0 V8 Supercharged (Petrol)

Thanks for the replies.
Is there much difference running costs wise between the V8 3.6 and V6 2.7 (or is that 3.0? I'm a bit confused as to when they've changed their engines' sizes)
JE Engineering in Coventry. Any good feedback on them? Better than some main dealers?
JE have a good reputation amongst enthusiasts. I'd buy from a main dealer if possible though, for the approved used cover. Is there much difference running costs wise between the V8 3.6 and V6 2.7 (or is that 3.0? I'm a bit confused as to when they've changed their engines' sizes)

Yes, as pointed out, one of the cars I pointed out to you was an HSE, and ideally you'd get Vogue spec, however it's going to be a balance, for your budget you won't get main dealer, plus Vogue spec, plus TDV8. I'd go HSE and get a TDV8, it's an infinitely better engine, anyway the HSE I pointed out had most of the extra spec you get with a Vogue anyway.
You need to be clear on whether you want a 'Full Fat' Range Rover, which comes with a TD6, or a TDV8, or Range Rover Sport, which has the TDV6, clearly my advice is assuming the former.
So, this is a 'BMW' straight 6 engined one http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...
And this is a JLR engined 3.6 V8 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011... (I quite liked that until I noticed they were fibbing on the mileage) )
Right?
I assume the straight 6 is the old 530d / X5 3.0d. Good engine?
And you're right, a bit difficult to find a low-ish mileage tdv8 in Vogue trim in my budget...there are a few though and I'm sure there's margin for haggling in this big 4x4 market.

The old 3.0 is a good engine but the TDV8 really is the one to have. And you're right, a bit difficult to find a low-ish mileage tdv8 in Vogue trim in my budget...there are a few though and I'm sure there's margin for haggling in this big 4x4 market.
The TDV8 is a very strong engine and even with high mileage examples, I've not heard of any particular problem areas.

You've got it. The 3.0 straight six was fantastic in the 530d, and X5, but it feels a little underpowered in the Range Rover. Can be much improved with a remap, but so can the TDV8, which is just a better engine all round. Loads of torque, much better suited. And this is a JLR engined 3.6 V8 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011... (I quite liked that until I noticed they were fibbing on the mileage) )

With your budget, I'd say you'd be crazy to buy a TD6. As you suggested, I'd find a really good TDV8 probably for around £27-28k, and haggle very hard!
Just make sure you get in there pretty quick before we see the seasonal surge in prices, dealers will be looking to build up stock shortly to deal with the autumn demand, especially if there's a harsh winter (which I suspect there will be).
