My f4 IS L was struggling under floodlit pitch conditions, so cracked out the trusy c/card for this...
Quick shot with an very unwilling model!
Lovely bit of glass, weighty though. The IS is spot on, and it's as sharp as a very sharp thing. It'll show up user error more than anything. If I could get away with keeping the f4 I would as it's such a good lens, but financially unviable I think.

I love it, I originally wanted to go for the new 120-300mm OS Sigma, but it doesn't seem to be delivered anytime soon, and in retrospect this will get used alot more given the focal length. It's going to take a little while to get used to it - like all kit really - but I really like what I've seen so far.
Just need to start working out at the gym more...
Can't remember the focal length off the top of my head, but they've all impressed me so far.
In terms of the 120, I really could use the extra range on the the football pitch, but guess I'll just have to lose some of the longer range shots. I had to change as we'll soon start losing the light earlier and I'll struggle to keep the shutter speed up high enough could definitely use a bit more range. I'm thinking of picking up a 1.4 converter for it.
If it comes to it, I could always hire a 300 for the big games!

You may find that the resolution of the 7D allows you to crop a lot and still get enough detail for your purpose - provided the shot (focus, frozen action area) is at least 'very good' in the first place. If you have a battery grip on the 7D it should balance very well. I found I got used to it with a day or so even with an extender fitted.
I tend to use mine with a 2x extender (Mk2 version) and that is quite effective. Low light would be a bit of a challenge for focusing options but on a 1D3 I have found that setting Auto ISO on as the 'safety' option is pretty good. ISO 3200 in half decent light is not too bad at all. Not sure if the 7D would give the same results and I appreciate you may not always have half decent light to play with. Might be worth checking it out as a possible option though.

Quite often, with the f4 I'm shooting at 5000 iso and in jpg the 7 gives very good results they just need a little run over with noiseware software, so with the 2.8 this gives me latitude to make sure the shutterspeed can remain high enough for a sharper image.If you have a battery grip on the 7D it should balance very well. It depends on the ground I'm at, it's all non league stuff but some are far better than others! I'm fortunate in that Kingstonian are at Kingsmeadow where AFC Wimbledon play, so the ground is up to football league standards.
I'm definitely going to look at an extender, probably the 1.4x.
