I've never really worried too much about the MPG of my 1.6 '5 as most of it's been short hoons around the countryside. Next week however I'm taking the ferry from Dublin to Holyhead, and will be driving to Liverpool and down to Silverstone for the Le Mans series. I've looked at it on Google Maps and it's roughly 800 miles driving all in.

Now I'm eager to know what sort of MPG is possible on a 1.6 Roadster? Most of the miles will be Motorway at maybe 3 hours a time, but there will be a bit of hooning involved..

So has anyone done some similar miles in a MX5, and have an idea on how much fuel they used over 800-1000 miles?

On a trip to London I did on Tuesday I averaged 36.5 MPG over 270 miles doing 70 on the motorway with short stints of 4th gear acceleration wink

Hmm, it's looking a bit better then. I'd be hoping for less than 3 tanks to take me there and back..

How much do you guys pay to fill up?

I'd budget four tanks, if you make it on three you haven't cleared over 5k rpm for the motorway bits smile

Not sure if this is any help but with my '5 (mk 2.5 1.8) I can get about 400 miles from a tank on the motorway @ about 80/85, and using quick maths this is about 36mpg I think. 2 tanks is about 100 quid these days.

So absolute minimum I would need is 2 tanks for an 800 miles trip. As someone has said I would budget in another 2 tanks maximum for a hoon and a 'just in case' scenario, you should be O.K with 3 tanks though I think

I'll be doing around 2500 miles in the next 2 week (driving to monza and then over/around an alp or two driving ), i'm banking on 250 to 300 miles per tank, absolute tops. Its only a 45 litre tank (1992), 4.546 litres to a gallon = 9.89 gallons to the brim, so between 25.27mpg and 30.33mpg.

You'll probably do 3 full tanks and you might get lucky, but definately budget for a splash and dash near home!

I'm going to need between 8 and 10 tanks. I don't want to think about how much thats going to cost!!

His figures match my experiences of driving to the 'ring in a MK1. Somewhere between 280 and 300 miles to a tank. (A tank being full to near enough to the E to make me concerned)

I have just completed my first long journey in my 92 eunos roadster, I did approximately 1200 miles from Cambridge to Umbria and averaged just over 38 to the gallon, I used approximately three and a quarter tanks of fuel which cost (including the original uk fill up converted to euro) around €188 in total. That was driving approximately around speed limits for most of the time but in no particular hurry. I'll be doing the second stage of the trip next week (across to Toulouse) so am hoping for similar figures, on one particularly carefully driven stretch the average just tipped over 40...
Just to add, the car was particularly heavily laden, with a large suitcase strapped on the boot rack, so that will have affected the economy I guess

Dont do what we done on the way back from the 'Ring and average 80-100mph.. It doesn't help your MPG hehe

I just calculated my first MPG figure in my 1989 1.6 with 140K KM on the clock and got 34MPG with mixed driving (about half and half short trips/hooning and motorway). Not too bad!

even tho you're doign motorway miles, due to the stupidly short gearing of the 5, you won't get greata economy - if it's with others i.e normally above 80mph and there's some hooning involved, you won't get much change out of 30mpg.

lower speed motorway running and still a bit of hooning and you'll be at 33-34 mpg

A long run at about 70 on the motorway gave about 37mpg recently - I nearly cried with happiness when I worked it out after getting about 30 tops doing shortish journeys through town. hehe

I normally get around 24-27ish to the gallon out of my Mk2.5 1.8, on a recent drive to Scotland, I managed just shy of 40 to the gallon (best of 38.5 I think and that included a blast to 130 leptons on the M6 toll) cruising at 70mph indicated with the roof down.

Mine doesnt have a light so I dont really know exactly how much I can get away with. After 250 miles of so the dial is on the 'E' so usually fill up then. However if your red light comes on then, at least I know I can get a little more out of it.

I've just done a 800kms trip last week, and that's in a Mk 1 1.8 auto Eunos. That's all roof down, and about 80% of town and A road driving. That's with me and the misses in the car, with a full boot and my wheelchair on the boot rack.
We used just under 2 full tanks of fuel and paid roughly £1.30 a litre.

As a bit an update I'm currently on the ferry for Wales; 116 miles done and the needle is still well over half (Between 1/2 and 3/4 full).

It did start over the full mark but it's looking good.. I had to resist overdoing the blasts through the Tunnel to the port.. hehe
