Petrol for Tam

Hi, I will be collecting my new Tamora tomorrow (at last, can't wait!). The dealer mentioned that I should just use standard unleaded fuel (ie the cheapest stuff). Is this correct or should I use Optimax (or equivalent Super etc...)? This is my first TVR!

Advice much appeciated.

You can use normal unleaded. I would suggest though that during trackdays super is used, Optimax is the best from this aspect. If you suffer a bit of pinking during hot weather or really give it the beans the odd tank of optimax during normal driving is worth it.

My dealer specifically told me to use boggo unleaded when I got my Tuscan so that's what I do. I try to use Shell whenever I can and I do admit that I give it the occasional tank of Optimax because of what others have said.

It would be nice to have a definitive answer on this from TVR.

Our Tamora has a sticker by the fuel cap saying "use 95 RON" (forget the exact words). Which means standard unleaded. How much benefit there is from going up to super I don't know. Gordon Brown will obviously be happy if that's the decision you make.

By comparison the Griff has a sticker on the drivers sun visor (why aren't visors on the Tamora) which says 97 RON.

I use super in the Griff though it don't complain if I need to use standard. Optimax is very good, the BP equivalent sh1te.

I know the Griff doesn't like it much. Ran lumpy on the 2 occasions I've tried it. Worse than standard 95 RON

I think you'll find Ed Tilsley has reported similar grievances with this product in his Griff.

assuming the tamora is mapped like the tuscan, it is mapped for 95 octane (standard) unleaded. by running 97 octane or optimax (98) you will not do any harm to it at all.

if a car is mapped for 95, it will only run the same or better on higher octane.

if it was mapped for 97, say, it wouldn't run right on 95.

remember: supermarket fuel is evil. it is filled with additives to basically 'spin it out'. there are no fuel cleaners in it, and valves and ports get very caked in carbon with supermarket fuel.

optimax was launched with the claim that it cleaned up engines. a couple of magazines, whom you assume had no bias, found it worked in some cases and cleaned valves and ports quite well.
