How do you hoon?
Discussion
This might sound like a very silly question but when/where and how do you do your spirited drives?
Yesterday I was keen to go for a drive to see if I'd finally solved a bit of a frustrating cooling problem on my car. I was planning on doing a big loop down the coast, but got about 5 miles from home and hit a tailback on the motorway for 15-20minutes which knocked all my enthusiasm out, so I came off the next junction and took some country lanes back home.
Usually the other thing is that making progress for your own enjoyment of a fun car is mistaken for competitive driving and I get idiots (both the boy-racer or frustrated reps) getting aggressive or keen to show me up by zooming past. And that's not difficult to be honest as any old TDi has more punch than my 17 year old petrol 1800 and makes me feel bad about my car. I also like to stick pretty religiously to speed limits, so might try and have a brisk blast up to the limit but then sit there, whereas these tools will carry on well over in oneupmanship. In a way it annoys me, but then I just remember that I'm the better driver for driving with my brain rather than my knob.
Some of the best driving I've ever had has been up in the Highlands off-season, so I'm thinking the key to it is empty roads!! Is it just the curse of living down south that everywhere is so busy almost all the time, and the fun roads have cameras and unnecessary low limits. Is the early sunday morning hoon the only way to do it should you not be lucky enough to live near good driving territory.

I'm exactly the same as you.. I enjoy going out hooning with PH, but I just can't get into hooning on my own.
Conversely, I don't really like hooning in groups. Too much pressure to keep up makes me worry about pushing my car a bit too far and running out of talent.I prefer to go solo.
Yoink!
Depends what I'm driving. I have a couple of routes, but living on the outskirts of London I have to go a long way to find any proper hooning roads, so I can't just 'go the long way' back from work sadly.
Occasionally I'll take a couple of hours to go off on a Sunday and explore the back roads of the home counties. It takes me about 20 minutes to get truly free of suburbia and then the fun begins... It's not unusual for me to use a whole tank of fuel on a morning's drive in the TVR, so I'll have to be a bit more sensible in the future.
I guess part of it is getting away from the smoke. The rural B-roads can be great when they're quiet, whether it's warm summer sunshine or a crisp winter day with smoke rising from the chimneys. Arggh, damnit, I want to go out for a hoon now...

Yesterday, i had a bit of a hoon, on the way home.
There's this piece of dual carriageway, with roundabouts every 3-400m, right through this industrial area at the back of Motherwell.
It was getting dark, there was no-one about.
I couldn't help myself.

Ravenscraig/Motherwell College area? There's this piece of dual carriageway, with roundabouts every 3-400m, right through this industrial area at the back of Motherwell.

I agree, i like trying to keep up momentum through all of the roundabouts

But yeah, its good when it is quiet. The only place i can hoon is about half a mile long, the eastbound A8 exit for Carnbroe/Coatbridge if you know the area.

I generally have the rule that if someone can see me doing it, I don't hoon. I like there to be nothing in front and nothing behind before I start making progress.
Same here, as soon as there is a chance of someone else being around or another car emerging from a blind corner etc, I'll ease off.Rawwr said:

Yep, spot on. I have a few local roads that I like to visit of a very early Sunday morning every now and again.
For a proper blast though you can't do much better than some of the less well known areas of the Peak District on a very early summer morning. Set off before dawn and find yourself on an empty, well sighted road just as the sun is coming up.
Finish off the last of your coffee, stereo off, set face to 'concentrate', go.
God I'm looking forward to getting my suspension sorted!

There is a short road in the area I love, Station road into Glassford from the Strathaven road. Its not to long of twisty, but the corners are flowing and the first few have great sight lines. Thats where I go if i'm looking for a quick hoon

When I'm on my own (no gf in the car!) and on a road I know well when there's no one else around.
Which doesn't happen very often anymore! Which is why I'm getting bored of my Clio!
You have to really push it to get the best out of it which I don't mind, I love having to work hard but I just don't get the opportunity to anymore. I've either got the gf in the car or there's a lot of cars about or I'm on a road that just isn't open enough to push on.

- try and think about when the roads will be least busy..
- pick roads which are as twisty as possible and you are unlikely to break the speed limit..
- Also try to pick roads with open bends/low hedges or no hedges etc - So you can see far into the distance and beyond the corner..
- drive very casually until you arrive there.
- if theres a nice stretch of road - pull over by the side of the road and only pull off when no cars have passed in the last 2-3 minutes so you know its less likely you'll end up sitting behind someone after the first two corners.
and most importantly... Enjoy!

This really bugs me as when i go out for a hoon i want to make good progress within the limits but i often get Idiots in Rep mobiles trying to push me on. Folk sitting 30mm off my chuff spoils a hoon for me. If i want to drive quick i go on the track where it is safer to do so. A hoon to me is all about driving to the limits and conditions and environment and putting the car back in the garage with a grin on my face.
