I have recently had some in warranty work done, replacing the dash insert on my year old Audi A5.

Having had the work done, Audi had issues getting the mileage on the new insert to read what had previously been shown and as a result had to leave the dash in with the incorrect mileage and order another replacement dash insert.

I have this week had the dash insert replaced (again) and when I went to pick up the car, the mileage was still 3500 miles higher than it should be and the service advisor said 'thats what it should be'???

I keep a close eye on my mileage as its a leas vehicle and have gone over the annual rate to the tune of 2000 miles, due to some unexpected mileage between Midlands and Brighton that was unforseen at the point of ordering. However my shiny audi has been returned with a mileage in excess of 21000 miles now, some 3500 more than its done??

Can anyone tell me, does audi, like BMW, have a number a places on each vehicle where the mileage is recorded to prevent clocking??

Many thanks

Richard

Google > "mileage correction" > abandoned field > go away for 20 mins > Come back with 3500 miles less than lease agreement.

WTF? Is it really this easy to "correct" mileage on new cars?

Absolutely! Back in the day anyone could do it, just wind back the counter however, it looked obvious!

Now all that is needed is a laptop, a lead and the right software.

There's huge money in it as so many people are leasing cars with limited mileage deals.

It's obviously illegal and I've personally never done it but I know a few who have.

This is the reason I buy cars based on condition not mileage!

With everything being computerised and digitalised it's easier than ever.

If a 14 year old can hack in to government databases then I'm sure hacking in to an Audi ECU isn't hard!!!

Note that knocking the mileage down only works if paperwork doesn't show it doing -100 miles in a month or similar due to their being evidence it had a higher mileage at some point. I suspect Audi will have a record of the mileage and the fact you queried it could even mean the have got a flag against it on the system.

Pretty standard part of your local indy annual service these days.

A lot of guys who do massive motorway miles do it annually. Their cars obviously hide the miles well because of the type of driving so you'd never really know.

Front bumpers are the only real give away if you're lucky.

Depending on where you have had it serviced/repaired, then the VW group (VW/Audi/VW Commercial at the moment, SE & SK to follow) captures specific data. This is done "on the fly", as such...not sneakily, just transparent.

Now this all depends on what DMS they use. (Dealer Management System) VW approve various systems. Now if you were to mention the Dealer on here, you would get shot, so feel free to PM me and I might be able to advise if the system they use definitely sends this.

Whether the dealer has access to this data after transmission, I am unsure, but someone at the Manufacturers end certainly will have.

Hope this helps.

Pre 1st MOT, at the end of 2/3 year high mileage leases, once they leave an auction.

Audi, BMW and to be honest most modern interiors wear so well especially when driven by people who travel alone on motorways and rarely carry much that isn't clean and tidy.

The interior of my car looks like it has done less than 10k miles and I'm on 45k. Of those 45k miles I would guess 400 were done with people in the back and 2000 with someone in the passenger seat so they all look brand new. There is no benefit to me in changing the mileage but I can see that you could easily get away with doing so. Especially because the way my lease company manages the cars means there is no official service history they just rely on me to get the oil changed every 5000 miles so there is no paper trail.

Will this change it in all the places that it is stored in ?

I think BMW has it in three places in the car and on each key.

[Preliminary Googling suggests that the new BMWs will have mileage stored in the any or all of it's 120 or so ECUs and that the professionals can remove all of them]

This scares me a lot. I've just bought a car an noticed it'd been serviced every 15k miles until the one before last when it was services after 4k :S I thought this was odd but thought new cars were hard to clock... *Now stting myself*

There's no need to "st yourself". If it's been clocked it's only 11k. Are you the 2nd owner? Could be a company car that's been sat around for 12 months. What's the dates on the services?

Might be worth doing a HPI check to see what entries are on the national mileage register for before doing any "mileage correction"...

It sounds like you cover a pretty high mileage, so if you were to correct the mileage then as long as the car didn't see an audi dealer for a few thousand miles no-one would ever know.

I normally do around 15,000 miles per annum, however I had to use it to travel to and from Brighton for a couple of weeks which toot the annual mileage up to round 17000 this year, but since going to Audi its now at 21000?

As you can imagine, I'm not impressed hence why asking about if I could go to Audi and ask them to check the mileage in other ECU's within the car?

It's about time the law shut down these clocking scums.

Sorry to be cynical, but any googler will be aware of mielage correction, it sounds like the OP is trying to get inside info on where the REAL mileage will be recorded on the car, in order to get it corrected undetected.
