OK,

Need to replace a faulty single 1G "Intermediate" light switch.....(rocker switch had broke)

Looking from the inside with the TOP at the top the old switch had:-

L1 Top left L2 Top Right

L1 Bottom Left L2 Bottom Right

New replacement switch has:-

L1 Top Left L1 Top Right

L2 Bottom left L2 Bottom Right

So, do I just ignore the actual positions and just put the wires in the same numbers as before, ie the wires that went into the old L1's into the new L1's and the wires that went into the old L2's into the new L2's.

Also, would it matter if the wires that went into the L1's got crossed, likewise with the L2's?

Hope that is clear.....nerd

Obviously I will use an electrician's screwdriver, and turn the power off first....biggrin

Thanks in anticipation....thumbup

Just make sure all the 1's go to 2's if you switch them or leave them as they are. Just be careful!

Thanks, don't worry, I'm not touching anything until I'm 110% sure...smile

If in doubt I'll call a local Sparky in.

Check the cables that they come from. The grey insulation covering the cables will contain either L1s or L2s. E.g. one cable will have two L1's and the other will contain L2s.

Doesn't matter which way round e.g. any L1 into any L1. Just keep them aligned eg. Bottom ones all from one cable.

They're all live so make sure the powers off.

Thanks for the kind replies, I appreciate they are all live, power will definitely be off.

Keeping it as simple as possible.....

The wire that went in Top Left in the old switch (L1).....where does that go in the new one?

The wire that went in Top Right in the old switch (L2)....where does that go in the new one?

The wire that went in the Bottom left in the old switch (L1) where does that go in the new one.

The wire that went in the bottom right (L2) of the old switch, where does that go in the new one?

Remember in the new switch I've bought, the (L1's) are BOTH at the top,(left and right) and the L2's BOTH at the bottom (Left and right)

I will leave it till daylight anyway.

I think I need a drink...biggrin

Look at where the cables come through into the box. Use the grey insulation as a guide. One cable will go upstairs, the other downstairs. Use these to separate the cables.

If in doubt - put a bit of tape onto one of the reds and take a photo of it prior to messing about with the cables.

If it was me - take one grey cable pair and put them in the top. Take the other grey cable pair and put them in the bottom.

So your old :
TopLeft L1 into top left L1.
BottomLeft L1 into top right L1
TopRight L2 into bottom left L2
BottomRight L2 into Bottom Right L2.

OK thanks very much, that seems clear enough, very much appreciated. If this is my last post on here you'll know I've disappeared into a cloud of smoke....

Could you not of just asked the electrician to do it when you asked to borrow his screwdriver?
