Well I suppose the other option still is winter/all weather tyres, it's just there's a Disco attached to them hehe

I've got very little idea about 4x4 vehicles, let alone a 20 year old Land Rover Discovery 1 200TDi tongue out It's being sold by a friend of my old man for shed money. Despite the age it looks very clean and tidy and what few niggles were pointed out the guy said he can sort (has worked on Discos before and has some spares). Should be a bit more practical than an MR2 roadster too...

Questions - are these generally reliable? Obviously they'll need regular servicing - I can only do basic stuff (oil changes, fitting parts attached with a couple of bolts etc - anything more than 'two spanners' will probably end badly smash) - Should I invest in lube...?

Rust seems to be a big problem - is there anything I can do? Lots of Hammerite? Waxoil? Just keep the underside clean? Or will I need to be handy with a welder and access to lots of sheet aluminium?

Are they any recommended owners forums asides from this one? smile

If it's in decent condition underneath, the best way of keeping it like that is regular jet-washing to get all the st off the chassis and regular waxoyling (once a year).

Otherwise, they're a doddle to work on. It's just like a big Meccano set! smile

As above, lift the carpet in the boot, thats quite a big rust point, also the front inner wings can go.

200tdi, is a simple engine, it's not a ball of fire but give it a full service and change all the diff and gearbox oils just to be safe.

Keep the underside really clean and waxoil it to keep it rust free.

Enjoy it smile

There's a bit of rust on the boot floor, just thinking of cleaning it up and getting some hammerite paint or similar down? Unless it means its rotten underneath? I guess that's were the Waxoyl comes in...

I don't have access to an air compressor but would something like this give a better application than the aerosol cans? http://www.lkperformance.co.uk/Oils/WaxoylHammerit...
