Just watched Mike Brewer sell the Alfa to some buyer. My issue is that he stated that it didn't require tax as it is a classic car, so I did a check on the dvla website and this is what came up.

The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for AUF 170K are:

Date of Liability 01 08 2012
Date of First Registration 24 08 1999
Year of Manufacture 1972
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1962CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour RED
Vehicle Type Approval

Can someone decipher the above and determine whether this car requires tax, or if you still need a disc but it costs 0.00?

Yes you still need a tax disc, hence the 'date of liability' will still show up on the DVLA database.

And date of first registration doesn't matter - it's date of manufacture that counts (though there can be some difficulty proving the latter in some instances).

You take your V5 and insurance certificate to your local post office once a year, and they give you a shiny new tax disc free of charge.

It was manufactured during 1972 (i.e. pre 1973) so will require VED, but the tax disc will say "nil". Oh, and it's immensely satisfying not having to pay for VED wink. I can see why you would be confused as it says registered 1999, but the it is the date of manufacture that is important. My Triumph 2000, for example, was exported to South Africa, and then imported back to the UK in '78, and on the V5C it says "registered 23/02/1978" and under special notes: "decld. manufactured 1971" thus qualifiying for free VED.

So yes, to say "you don't need tax" is wrong, but crucially you don't have to pay for it!

Hope this helps.

Oh, and in before title wink
