Hey, I've got a Nissan Micra SX Dci and I know its a rubbish little car, but i'm wondering about the a/c.. I got this secondhand and the a/c hasn't worked since I got it. I had the gas pressure checked yesterday and apparently it comes up "green" on the pressure gauge. But when I try to start the a/c a high pitched whine kicks in (which the mechanic says is normal and that its the magnets) and only warm air is blown into the car.. anyone got any ideas what this needs? is the whining noise normal as I've never heard it like that in other cars?

cheers for any help

Could be a problem with the heater valve stuck open or the controls themselves not working.

In a modern car you shouldn't hear any major whining. Are you sure the compressor is kicking in? (Revs dropping slightly for a mo). If so, system has a charge and there are no leaks so fault lies elsewhere.

I would go to an a/c specialist.

Well the revs do increase slightly when I turn the a/c on. Is there a way of checking the compressor myself? or is it a hassle

and as for the heating controls, if I forget about the a/c button and use the standard fans temps, the air temp does seem to go up and down as I change the temp.

This 'Mechanic' doesn't perhaps work for the same place you bought the car does he?

Do they sell cars at Kwik Fit!?

Mechanic is talking arse. Sounds like a knackered compressor / clutch to the compressor.

It depends on how loud the whining noise is, AC compressors aren't silent.

Yeah, thats what he said, that it was the normal noise, but as its a small car you can hear it more.. but I did think he was talking rubbish as I've never heard that noise in any other car..

Can you hear the compressor click in when it's switched on? Failing that, can you see the pulley? Look at it and see if you can see the compressor engaging when the a/c button is pressed.

Make sure your pollen filter isn't blocked too.

Where am I looking? under the bonnet by the compressor? I'm not sure how to get at my pollen filter, I'm looking into it now

You need to take it to an A/C specialist, not a strategically shaved monkey!

You are going to idiots as the pipes should be bloody hot coming from the compressor.
