Does anyone here use one?

The front and back lawns at Fun Bus towers are a mess and have been since we moved here in Feburary. I've used all the usual products to try and fill the bare patches and I just think now that instead of spending more money doing it DIY I'll call someone who actually knows what to do and get me results.

Any experiences? Good or bad?

We've been using Green Thumb for a couple of years now and the lawns are much better, no moss at all. They've just started offering a monthly payment scheme, works out at £9 a month for the basic service ie without the scarifying etc. We had it scarified at the start and not since, don't know if it needs too much of that tbh, that's the expensive bit. GT won't fill in the bare patches tho.

Everytime I see their vans I think of the song "Dr. Greenthumb" by Cypress Hill, which isn't about lawn treatment, but is horticulturally themed I suppose.

Sounds interesting that, I tried a quick fix with Morrisons Lawn Seed, may as well have sprinkled sherbert on there instead for all the good it did.

Greenthumb......complete bunch of retards.

£300 to do my back lawn (fair size of lawn....) and it looked like the chap sowing was pissed and on a jolly. After several calls they came along and agreed it could be better, after an argument agreed to do the job properly.

Spend the money on moss killer/seeds or whatever you need and do it yourself. You'll save money and it will be done properly.

You would be better off spending the money getting it cut regularly, if you don't do it already yourself.

Regular (minimum once a fortnight, once a week is better) cutting is the one thing that most people don't do, and the biggest cause of poor lawns.

If you already cut your lawn regular, the next thing on your list should be to water during hot dry periods. Once you are doing both of these things, you are already 85% (made up statistic)to having a lawn as good as you are likely to have. If you then want another 15% improvement, spend some money on fertiliser etc treatments.

Top tip number two: Cut on your mowers highest setting. You won't notice the difference immediately, but it will stay greener much longer into the season, and wear much less.

Green thumb were excellent when we used them. But if you start doing some autumn work on your lawn now it will give you a good base to work form in the spring.

Used Green Thumb for 12 years, excellent, but do remember, this is a franchise and is only going to be as good as the operative running it. (Portsmouth area)

My father in law has used them for a few years and has a spendid lawn, although this year the dry conditions haven't helped.

So the sales pitch that they can spread a special fertilizer that holds water and will keep the grass looking green and lovely (as quoted to me) is bks then?

Typical Greenthumb......load of bks yes

Slightly unfair I think in that their water retaining fertilizer is an additional treatment, if he hasn't paid for it then he won't have it.

Like most franchises I guess its a bit of a lettery as to how good your local one is but ours gets a thumbs up from me.

Seriously chaps, this isn't anything you can't do yourself.

As mentioned previously, cut the grass regularly, give it a heavy watering during dry spells and make sure you feed it at least once a season with the appropriate fertilizer. Scarify in September with a rake to remove thatch and encourage side shoots.

Get this book and it really is all very simple and not particularly hard work (apart from raking).

That isn't a lawn, it's a football field!! Never had a problem with them here either.
