I ordered some new Kumhos the other day for my vx220 to replace the bridgestone re040's (front and rear) and whilst they havent arrived yet I re checked my front tyres today and they actualy have a lot more tread than i thought. Well over the legal limit. So do i really need to replace them immediately?

The tyres as can be seen from the pics below small cracks in the tread caused by the usual degridation of the rubber. It looks just surface damage and goes nowhere near the tread. The tyres were manufactured in week 14 of 2007 and bridgestones site says they should be ok for 5 years.

So are they ok? Should i replace them immediately or stick the new tyres in the garage for a bit? (the rear vredsteins will definetly be getting changed)

I thought in a mid-engined car, that good, and evenly worn front and year, tyres were absolutely vital?

Personally I'd replace them.....especially if you're doing the rears.

Yes, those tyres have probably got another thousand or two left but with colder/wetter weather coming you will notice a big difference.

The rubber has hardened, that's why they crack like that, you'll notice a big difference with a new pair......

If you can afford it - yes.

If you can't - no.

The 175's on the front might not be ideal on the rear seeing as the proper size is 225 on the rear.

Think i might stick the new kumhos on the car front and rear and keep the bridgestones in the garage as emergency spares in case of major puncture disaster in the future.

I was feeling miffed that a set of Pirelli's made in week 7 of 2007 were recently awarded an "advisory" at MOT because they had slight cracking, much like yours.

Never had that problem with Michelins.

I'm anal on tyred but cracks like that would spell replace for me. Tread wise I normally swap at 3mm, below that I think tyres noticably struggle in the wet
