ADSL Router problems & modem HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Discussion
Well I have been using a USB modem to connect to the internet, finally deciding to get a combined ADSL Modem/Router.
So.....install the router run the config, great fine connecting to the internet, run the firewall settings.
Now....I notice the old BT Voyager Broadband connection in my network connections folder think I won't be using it again to delete it...silly. Now I cannot connect to the internet via the router even though the router is still connected.
So I try to reinstall the BT software for the ADSL modem, eventually do so (it's a typically crappy BT installation program and the uninstall doesn't work either so it's write over anything on reinstall).
I get it all installed but it won't connect to the internet now, even though the settings for connecting/username (no password for BTB) are all set automatically.
Then I notice under control panel/internet options/BT Broadband/settings/properties/Networking TAB it has as the "Type of dial-up I am calling" not PPP For Windows 95/98/2000/XP Internet, but PPPoE and I can find no way of changing it back to PPP even if that will get the ADSL Modem back connecting.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for either getting the modem back working or the Router talking to my PC?
Many thanks
]whats the router?
PPPoA is the correct thing. You need to make sure dns is working and that your desktop is talking to that. You should have no connection information, or you can check the box which says never dial.
Netgear DG834
I also made sure it was set to never dial too.
What I have done and did do before the router connection stopped working was assign the PC the correct IP address, subnet mask and default gateway of the router, and the DNS servers of BT Broadband. All merry and dandy. Then as I mention when I deleted the BT Broadband dialup (which I thought would be redundant) out of my network connection folder I lost the connection.
And I have tried to get it back online by reinstalling the modem but that doesn't connect.

firstly you need to stop using the bt modem (usb one) and use the netgear with the ethernet cable. then i assume you need to use "PPPoE" option to connect to internet. (this is done through the router/modems screen on internet explorer) you just pop your details in (username/password etc and you should be able to connect. it should be plain sailing.
you really don't need any connections on the pc, just make sure it connects through the LAN

Can you log on to the router still?
on the instructions, there should have been an IP to type in to IE.
Only time I ever had this hapen was when the pc decided to log out and drop the connection, the little green LED on the 834 stayed constant though making me think the connection was still up.

I have deleted the BT USB Modem again from my connections (can't uninstall it as the uninstall software doesn't work
typical) When I run the Connection wizard for the Router it gives me a PPPoA connection setting as BT Broadband asks for a usernam only no password for logging on I guess.
DO you mean the LAN Settings on the Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings.
I have the number for Broadband to go into the empty field but which options should be ticked on the page (to be double sure it's right)?
Automatically Detect Settings.
Use Automatic Configuration Script - with BR dial number (which is only a x,xx number)
Just the last one or both ticked?
I didn't have to run any wizard - I just plugged it into the phone line and the network socket in the pc, went to IE and entered the ip address for the router and logged on. Then entered:
Basic Settings
Does your connection require a login? YES
Encapsulation - PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
Login: (your username)
Password: (your password)
ADSL Setting
Multiplexing method: VC-BASED
VPI = 0
VCI = 38
Applied the changes and closed IE.

That's exactly the settings I have.
Which is probably why I slamed my fist down on the desk at about 5pm this afternoon.
Still not working though.
It was when I deleted the old dialup connection from the Network that things went pear shaped.

if you are with bt for adsl, try calling them up for technical support. my dad wanted to go wireless so bought an ethernet modem and wireless access point. had to call bt to tweak the settings for the adsl to work. so could be something simple like that.
the netgear must have an advanced setup so you can do this. under network connections, view all network connections and the local area connection should be enabled. it will receive all the settings from the router if the router's dhcp server is on (to assign ip addresses dynamically to the pc's on the network)
you shouldn't be connecting with the old bt dial-up icon or connection. i assume that's why you bought a modem/router.

Sorted now.
Many threats to throw the PC out of the window seems to have done the trick.
I was like Basil Fawlty and his Austin 1100.
"Come on, start, will you?!! Start, you vicious ba***rd!!! Come on! Oh, my God!! I'm warning you - if you don't start.. I'll count to three. One..two..three!!! Right! That's it! You've tried it on just once too often! Right! Well, don't say I haven't warned you! I've laid it on the line to you time and time again! Right! Well..this is it!
I'm going to give you a damn good thrashing!"
I am now calm.

well done. what did you do to finally get it going?
Rebooted the router a few times, reset it to factory settings a few times, unplugged everything a few times, ran setups a few times, repeated everything again a few times.
Finally I think it cried "enough" gave in and let me connect. Internet & LAN all working as they should.
Really do not know what was wrong. Just tried to setup everything as new as if it was the very first time the PC was going to be connected to the internet.
