Sorry for the rant...
Was in a company van heading back to base to drop it off and still in Reading town center I overtook a police van on a dual carriage way.
There were some road works happening so the lanes converged into one just before the stoplights and opened up again right after.
Was now in front of the police van with a vehicle in front of me waiting for the light to go green. This was at 21.40 and it was pretty dark.
He pulls away and since he was doing 20mph on a 40mph limit I quickly changed onto the now available lane and floored it to get as quickly as possible to the 40mph limit. I was looking in the rear view mirror checking the police van. Was thinking if they follow me
then they're idiots!
Well just as soon as I thought that, blue lights flashing everywhere and they quickly eat up the road to sit right behind me. For a minute there I gave them the benefit of the doubt thinking they might have received a despatch or something but noooooo! They were after me!!!
I can tell you now, that got me upset! I didn't speed and there was no reason to stop me.
I pull to the side, park up, got out of the van and headed towards them.
"Can I help you?" I asked
"Whats the rush?" were the first words that came out of the police.
That really got me fuming! (Is this what the police do? Do they stop everyone and go asking what the rush is?)
"What's the rush?? Oh please! Give me something better than that! Is that IT?" I asked completely disapointed.
"Ok, you were speeding." I got as a reply from the police.
"Hold on! Don't give me that. I was well aware of what I was doing and I know what the speed limit is." I replied
At this point the other police officer who was driving comes to me asking what the speed limit in that road is. I told him it was 40mph and the sign was right there and that they coudn't come to me with fairy tales 'coz I was well aware of what I was doing. (yeah had to say it again!)
They tried to get me to admit to speeding by saying they had to go over 55mph to catch me and that it proves it. Oh man!!! I coulda/shoulda killed him there!
My reply was: "NO! That proves YOU were speeding! And instead of falling asleep behind that other car doing 20mph if you had pulled away at the same speed I did you wouldn't be harassing me right now. So, let me see, it's not alright for me to speed but it's perfectly safe for you to do it???" yeah I was screaming a litle and speaking with my arms too.
He didn't like that and I could tell he was looking for an answer. He gave me the it's-in-the-course-of-my-duty speech as if I was going to buy that. I did give him grief by asking "So its your job to drive unsafe???"
I told them I admited to pulling away quickly and that was it. There is no law against it. (as if a mercedes vito pulls away quickly! Ha!)
But did they stop their unfounded speculation? NOPE! They said I was speeding and that they should give me a ticket!!!
Oh boy! Don't go there. They heard me right there and then.
"WRONG! You cannot give me a ticket simply because I WAS PAYING MORE ATENTION TO THE ROAD THAN WHAT YOU WERE! In fact, this is nothing! If anyone here is in transgression then it's you for causing a public nuisance and harassing me for no reason while endangering my life (parked on blind left bend of dual carriage-way). And you have already admitted to doing 55mph on a 40mph limit. Right now I've got you for DRIVING WITHOUT DUE CARE AND ATTENTION, BREAKING THE SPEED LIMIT, AND CAUSING A PUBLIC NUISANCE WHILE ENDANGERING MY LIFE! Where's your proof?????"
This is where the course of the talk changed. They started saying that it would work both ways. They could say I was speeding, I could say they were speeding. They were now informing me I was going
to go away without a ticket (nothing new there) but that I was lucky to have found them 'coz others would give me a ticket. (FACT: They can't issue a ticket without propper proof and even if they do you
CAN sue them for not having proof and harassing a civillian, or at least put a complaint down against them which never looks good on their record. Yeah, it works both ways!)
"That's not how it works" I said.
"Do you know the road traffic act?" They asked as if this was going to scare me.
"I know enough! I know enough!" I replied. Funny how they didn't seem to have anything else to say.
This is where I told them that I understood what they were trying to do and that it was in the interest of everyone's safety and all that.
I also told them that they have an ungrateful task. But stopping people to speculate about if they were speeding is a bit too much. One of them started saying that used up talk about what if there was a child there and blah blah blah. (I don't wanna go into this but a child? On the center divider of a dual carriage way?? Are these children misteriously being teleported into odd places now just so drivers can hit them????)
They came to me with a talk about a child they had to scrape off the road just 'coz the driver was doing 5 mph over the speed limit. I played along here just for the sake of it but was really thinking that was a lot of crap.
The way this sort of sentence is organised is just to shock you and make you fell guilty and all that
but you should know better! If you're going to accept this sort of smeg, just like that then you not playing with a full deck!!
I did tell'em that I know perfectly well this whole speeding issue is being taken a tad too far. They couldn't comment to that (but their silence said a lot). I did apologise for the grief I gave them but in my oppinion, they asked for it!
We did end up having a reasonable discussion. They saw I was a reasonable person. They were reasonable too once they stopped the charade. I just didn't take any shit and nor should you. (This is still a free country and not a military dictatorship. Respect works both ways!)
Ended up honestly wishing them a nice shift as we went our separate ways.
Again, sorry for the rant but I had to. I hope some good will come from you guys reading this 'coz it seems some are afraid to use their mouths.
Best wishes,
Peter Ferreira

Happens to all of us.
I pulled away from some lights 'faster than normal' and got upto the speed limit of 60 quite quickly. The police car a couple of cars behind was held up by a slow starter and couldn't get away. Soon enough, blue lights on screaming up behind me, pulled me over for speeding in similar circumstances.
Again, like you a pointed out that I hadn't been speeding and they had had to speed to catch me up (although my conversation had less arm waving).
All in all he was a nice chap

i think the police just seem to get upset if you overtake them. They probably think it shows a lack of respect and assume your some scrote Unless they are on the motorway doing about 50/60 in a marked car like they do sometimes which is when ur supposed overtake to but hardly any one does
Mind you I got pulled over by Bib once for going to slow behind their van. They were pootling along at 20 ish in a 40 (eating their din dins - maybe donuts?) and I decided not to overtake as didnt want to push my luck.
After a while on came the blue lights and they wanted to know why we were going so slow and hadnt overtaken them!
Thought we must be pissed or summat.
Some times you just cant win..........
Your damned if you overtake them and you are damned if you dont!
Best to be polite though I always think at all times.
A little groveling goes a long long way

A Common trick which has been done to me a few times - me cruising Mway at 56mph in lane 1, BiB overtake and then slow to 55ish so that I am now reasonable distance behind. Sit there waiting for Mr rep in his TurboNutterBastard to come stonking past my truck at warp speed - easy nick!
I wouldn't argue with TWO police officers, or one with a speedometer.

Hmmm, indeed, knick me for what?
For driving under the speed limit and for overtaking as quickly and as safely as possible so I would get out of someone's blind spot? (advanced driver trainning)
Must I point out again that this isn't a military dictatorship? You can't just stop people like this. Do you think I haven't seen police officers getting a kick from intimidating people before? (You shouldn't fear a representant of the law, he's your friend and your equal.)
Must I point out that I should have taken the badge ID's and made a formal complaint?
Atitude? My concern for mine and other people's safety (including theirs)?
Can you believe it was only after pointing out they were endagering my life that one of them advised us to place ourselves away from the two vehicles in case there was a collision? (huge massive walls on both sides of carriage way, no way to escape and be stoped safely.)
What was it again that they wanted to achieve? It's obvious police seem interested in stopping people just for the fun of it. (judging by some of the posts in this thread.)
It's funny how they keep missing the slow driver who is driving without due care and attention, or do you honestly think doing 20mph on a 40mph dual carriage way is safe driving.
Please don't tell me that he was doing safe speed, because it's been proven millions of times before that you can drive safely at speeds that exceed a posted speed limit and you can drive dangerously at half the posted speed limit.
knick me for what?

Peter

Well it's not that free a country. We have no right to freedom of speech, no right to bear arms, our press is censored, you can have your driving license taken off you for pretty much any reason, speeding is considered (by the courts) a bigger offence than burglary - need I go on?

You're lucky. Two Policemen saying you were speeding in court vs. you saying you were not - you lose. Best not to antagonise them IMO.
Many BiB are good people and deserve respect, except for 2 of Surrey's finest: My girlfriend got done in court (3 points which she wouldn't accept at the roadside, pasrtly due to their attitude and them being rude) because 2 Policemen said she ran a light. She didn't but even though they had no proof the magistrate took their side. The only proof they had was her car crossing and leaving the junction (a wide junction) as 'their' light turned to orange from red. They said in their opinion she had run the light from her direction.

Does seem to be one rule for them and one for us though ... last night I followed a Panda plod home. As we approached the rear of a line of stationary traffic at a set of lights said plod veerede sharply right (no indication at all) into the next lane and proceeded to accelerate away very rapidly. Now if he'd have been behind me and I did that ... well I expect I'd had been pulled for a little chat.
