Occasionally stiff clutch pedal

My V70 T5 suffers from an occasionally stiff clutch pedal. I know that if it was stiff all the time this would indicate that the clutch was wearing out but in this instance it's sometimes as light as a feather and sometimes pretty heavy.

Any ideas why I might be getting this erratic behaviour from essentially a pretty simple system?

Is it hydraulic or cable driven?

Does this happen when cold/hot etc? My Saab 9000 had a similar problem in the hydraulic system, which has just got better with time. It only started after I changed the whole system (clutch, slave, master and associated hoses).

It's hydraulic and there's no correlation between the car (or ambient) temperature and the clutch pedal stiffness.
