Exhaust manifold-turbo studs -
Discussion
To anyone who has had their turbo's off, etc. Is there a GOOD reason that studs are used in the exhaust manifold/turbo interface, rather than bolts/nuts. The reason I ask is that there is so little clearance between the turbo flange/casing and some of the stud nuts that a ring spanner can't be used, with questionable end results. So I'm planning to drill out the manifold and use bolts and nuts instead.
Am I nuts?
Probably...but what am I missing. I can't see any downside, but considerable upside as it will now be a synch to torque up the nuts, and opposed to a royal PITA. And what would be the best material, given the high temps involved.
Cheers

my car has bolts/nuts so you are right, bin the stud and nuts idea, the only issue you may have is the bolts need to first go through from the manifold side and the head of some bolts will struggle to get past the manifold tubing and need a fair old whack to go in, especially if your doing the change over in situ.
