I have an E39 and recently noticed it was losing water/coolant, literally - a puddle on the ground.

I have traced it to the side (White/clear) filler tank, where it joins at it's base to the radiator.

Does fixing this involve a whole new rad? Having looked at the radiator closely, it appears to be in very good condition.

The cooling system on these cars is quite literally made of cheese. Replace the rad - if it hasn't exploded yet its only a matter of time until it does, they all split at the end tanks no matter how nice they look elsewhere.

Ah ok, if I can get away with just replacing the tank & cap so much the better!

Thanks for the advice chaps

Edit: This is the tank I need but my tank itself is not split, the water is coming from the join tank to rad with the o ring.
Do you think all I need is the o ring, or is it just a question of time before my tank splits?
Tbh, it does look a little bulged...but it has looked this way for the last 4 years I have had the car?

I came too close for comfort to writing off my 528's engine when the radiator let go, replace everything- £500.
