Broadband on a boat

Hi there

My uncle is having a few issues with the internet on his boat. I got him an o2 monthly data only contract but it's not picking up 3G which in turns makes using the internet very slow.

As I understand it the sim goes directly into the boat rather than using a dongle.

I've the added problem that the boat is used in the UK, Ireland and France therefore roaming is a must.

Could I ask what everyone else uses and how do you find it?

Not sure where he is plugging the sim card in but has he got a marine 3G antenna?

I use a laptop on board and just plug the Iphone in under my tether contract.

The Orange 3G signal is generally good around our East and South coasts and seemed pretty good South of France and Calais but offshore you will be out of range of mobile masts. Think 20 miles as a maximum.

If you want offshore data then satellite is the way to go. Or if it is just marina based then virtually all marinas now have wifi that just involves a fee sign up each time you connect.

Anyway I have the laptop all hooked up to the TV, Garmin and Boss stereo. Now all I need to achieve is a local wireless nework and I should be able to control everything from IPhone remote anywhere on the boat. Anybody got experience of 24v wireless hubs?

The sim goes into a 2N Easy Route which is 3g enabled.
