Hi All

Insurance is due at the end of the month, and I've been trying to find someone that offers 'drive other car' cover to someone under 25.

It seems as if lots of companies have stopped offering this as standard as it is, so trying to find someone who will offer it to a 22 year old is proving difficult.

I don't necessarily need it, but there have been plenty of times when it would have come in useful.

I know Bell, Quinn and others used to offer it, but I don't think they do anymore.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Quinn don't, I used to be insured with Quinn and had this clause on my policy. They went into administration, then came out of it again one of their new terms and conditions was that they would not not offer this to anyone under the age of 25, in line with most other insurers.

I think you'll struggle to be honest.

I had it 6 years ago at 17 years old with Quinn Direct with a TPF+T policy.

Ever since then I've always had fully comp and I've never been offered it and probably won't until I'm 25.

To be honest, I've never been in the position to use it, but would be nice.

It's not that great you know. I believe most of these "drive other car" policies is for 3rd party cover only even though your main car is fully comp.

So, you jump in your mate’s Fezza - drive into a ditch/post/wall - insurance will not give you a penny.

I'm 24 and fully comp with the AA. I have 3rd party on other peoples cars with their permission. I had it last year with the AA too. When I got my papers through I phoned to make sure I would be covered and the woman on the phone confirmed it but said it was unusual for someone my age to get 3rd party cover on other vehicles.

Don't worry, I don't have any friends with Ferraris, nor would I want to drive them third party!

It wouldn't be a regular thing, more just if I needed to drive my parents car back from somewhere or to share driving with someone.

That's it, you are driving entirely at your own risk. Bin it and you better be able to pay for it! I remember reading on this site about a PHer having a quick test ride on a friends bike on a bikers ride out, binned it and ended up paying for a £10,000 bike that was totally wrecked.

Also, it's meant to be used only in emergencies or other unusual circumstances, it's not intended to be used as a waiver to drive other people's cars as though they were second vehicles. People doing this, and kids insuring a 1.0L shed as their primary vehicle then driving a WRX or something registered to their parents as their real day to day car, are what lead to so many insurers taking this privilege away.

Fair enough.

The only time I have used my "drive other car" feature was when my mate let me drive his Chimaera 500. It was my first ever drive of anything sporty and knowing that I was only insured as Third Party didn't fill me with much confidence at all! It wouldn't have been so bad if it was mum's shopping car though!

That's the more likely scenario. As I said it isn't a necessity, and I wouldn't want to be driving anything fast/expensive that wasn't mine with only third party cover, but there have been times where it would come in useful.

Cheers for the replies, but it seems that as I thought, it isn't easy to get it these days.

I think I'll just get back to looking for my cheapest ordinary renewal quote!

I used to have it with HIC when I was 19 or so, but that's a long time ago now, no idea if they still offer it.
It was something I used regularly and still do to this day.

Why the UK can't have a system where the car is insured not the driver I don't know, it makes life so much easier!

Unfortunately comparison sites don't show if DOC is included, which is a pain! Of the people I know with DOC the only person I know who uses it is a colleague who regularly drives a friends car, but there is no 'need' to do it.

Insurance runs out this month, so any other suggestions before I renew with Admiral?

I'm currently with Admiral and did a quote with AA, I am also the same age as OP. AA came out near enough £1000 more than Admiral!

I think my current renewal is around 600 which takes some beating, but I wouldst mind paying a bit more if I could get 3rd party cover.

I'll have spend the evening getting some quotes!

I'm sorry to post on this topic without anything meaningful to add; I just wanted to point out the laugh at your appropriate username for that!
