I've just bought a new van. I've heard that I can take the V5, MOT Cert and Insurance policy to the post office and register it and tax it there and then. Is this right??? The seller gave me the V5 so that I could do this straight away because there was no tax left on the van. Any help would be great, cheers!!!

You can tax it with the green part (new keeper supplement) but need to send the V5 away to the DVLA to register it in your name.

To tax, you'll need the new keeper's supplement from the V5C (the green tear-off), the MOT and an insurance certificate.

And as above, the rest of the V5C will need to go to the DVLA in order to re-register you as the new keeper.

Generally yes the PO will tax the car and send the amended V5 to the DVLA which generally takes about 14 days to be posted to you by the DVLA.

Docs must be in order obviously.

ah right now I have a problem... I was going to put the car in my name. Now we've decided to put it in my boyfs name but I've already filled my details onto the green tear-off slip! The other part is blank apart from the sellers bit. Is there any way around this?? Surely people must lose/damage these all the time? Or is it just me being stupid? lol. :/ I'm against the clock cos the tax ran out 5 days ago! frown

Don't the post office have a form for if you lose your v5 or the green bit?? Sure they do in which case use that. If you send it off as is one issue you will have is that it adds more owners so worth thinking about.

Thanks for your help! So I'm going to go in the morning with the V5, MOT Cert, Insurance policy and hope for the best! There must be something they can do for people without the green tear-off bit!
