How to attach a hoist to my steel beam?
Discussion
I am currently extending my house see HERE and I have a rather large steel beam installed across the middle of my garage, the beam is the right hand one in the first picture and is only supporting the floor above it, no walls or other structure. I would like to have an eye loop of some sort coming through the ceiling mid span to enable me to do engine lifts etc..
Can any one suggest a way to do this without weakening it? It will need to look relativity nice and not hang very low, the steel will be boxed in so it will need to drop approx 60mm.
I'm sure someone on here must have done similar???
Cheers
Paul

That is if the bottom of the Beam is to be left exposed?? You can mount a beam clamp and hang a chain block from it, one of these!!

There is a second hand beam clamp for sale just now that's sitting at 99p! It could be a bargain and would look fresher with a lick of paint.

But, if the beam isn't going to be exposed, you'd need to either drill a hole and mount a shackle in place, or weld a lifting lug onto the beam.

The trolley would be the best IMHO.rash_decision said:

The trolley would be my choice as well, but looking at the wooden joists that meet the Steelwork, a trolley wouldn't travel along the beam.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

I think I will bid on the ebay one and see how I get on, will have to wait untill the building inspector has finished though as it is meant to be clad in fire board incase it should melt
