Help with stuck window
Discussion
The front driver side window on the 159 decided to get stuck earlier.
It is stuck in the down position, it moves up and down about an inch, but makes a nasty grating sound.
ive had it all apart (looks very complicated!), but can't see anything wrong, and now can't get the door card back on!
so im going to have to just pay someone to fix it! and im assuming they will need to take the door card off anyway?
but who do i call? will someone like autoglass be able to do this?
and secondly, whats the best way to secure the window, to stop rain getting in mainly?
cheers

On my car, the window glass is attached to the window lifting mechanism by two window clips like these;

I was able to loosen them by undoing the screw on them which allowed me to pull the window glass up while the mechanism stayed down/ stuck. Might be worth looking if you can do something similar.
ETA, the window sits in the black bits and the clips were located along the bottom edge of the window glass, if that helps...

thanks, a hammer is VERY close to going through the f
king thing at the moment, but i will try and refrain.
the clamps go onto the bottom of the glass so can't just move that up.
ive just called auto glass, who said they can have a look at it, if i drive to them (25 miles away) but if its something like a regulator/guide then they can't.
so not that sure what to do know?

Can you still hear the window motor work when you try to operate the window? If not, then the expensive bit is broken. If the car has plastic gears, it could be that these have broken away from the motor, hence no resistance in moving the glass.
On VAG cars, they often use a window spool along which wires run in opposing directions to lift and lower the window. If the spool fails completely, than what you describe (free window movement) can happen. Not sure if this would be true of Alfas aswell.

Certainly sounds similar. This is what the mechanism on my car looked like;

The yellow bits are the window clips which hold the window pane, the red bits are pulleys, the blue bits are the cables which move the window up and down, and the green bit is the regulator which feeds the cables in/out. On the otherside of the door panel behind the green window regulator is the window motor.
On my car, the regulator is made of plastic, and when the spool inside broke, the cables did not feed in/ out correctly and caused the motor to make a grating noise against the resistance of the broken spool. The window was totally stuck, and I had to release it from the clips to be able to move it up.

Above is a better example of the regulator. I appreciate this guide is for a VW, but it may help you shed some light on the problem; http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?1015107#....

It can all come as one (as in your link), or without the metal rails which is the one I got ( like this).
With the metal rails kit, it would have been necessary to drill out the rivets that attach the old rails on, and pop rivet the new ones back in, but on my car at least it was easy enough to swap the new cables onto the old rails. I do not see why that should be any different on your car tbh, as it was just a case of lineing everything up as it was when your removed the old cables, and stretching them around all the pulleys.
Regarding the window clips, on VAGs they were originally plastic, so if one broke it put more strain on one side of the regulator causing it to fail, so it is possible that happened to your car too. The kit you posted a link to though seems to include replacement clips anyway.
Edited to add; this kit shows a bit better how the new cables can simply be mounted on the old rails.
