I was led to believe that this is a rule of the governing body issuing competition licences, that you only display numbers whilst competing, under threat of having said competition licence removed.

Thus the great paradox that if you see a car showing competition numbers it's almost certainly not being driven by the holder of a competition licence!

Yep, that's my understanding too. Driving on the roads with your race numbers clearly visible is the sort of thing that's more likely to get you in trouble with the RAC MSA/BARC/BRDC or whoever rather than anything else. Remembering TOTB last year, the single line of narrow tape through the race numbers on a couple of the Vipers didn't seem to be within the spirit of those rules...

Though from Tonyrec's thread you will probably be in more danger of receiving a smartarse remark from any policeman who stops you than anything else. There's nothing like the old classic "Who do you think you are ? Stirling Moss ?"

Under the technical regs of the MSA (the licence-issuing governing body for British motor sport)....

Under Common Regulations, rule E11.3.11
"...Any means of identifying individual cars during a competition MUST be removed at the finish of the event."

The regs go on to specifically repeat the same ruling under various other sections, for Off-road competitions and for rallies etc.

I assume this doesn't apply to trailered vehicles?

Even tho the Blue Book says the identification must be removed I was under the impression that just putting a line through the numbers was ok.

I've been stopped three times by BiB whilst driving the rally car on the public highway but not on event.

I always make sure the numbers have a wide line of white tape over them, plod never seemed to give toss - usually they're more interested in poking around under the bonnet or inside the car...

It's pointless removing the numbers every time if you are getting the same entry number at each event - just a waste of money.

One of my WRC friends reckons that it can cause a bit of a problem with your insurance company if you have an accident whilst not on event and your numbers aren't crossed - apparently they can argue that you were in competition.

So just put a cross over them and everything should be ok.
