Have any of you guys experienced creaky steering?

Basically I get excessive creaking coming from the steering wheel through it’s entire movement. It’s not a whine or a scraping, just lots of creaking!

Also the problem is a little strange, it has only come to light in the recent hot weather and tends to disappear or at least reduce after it has rained.

Can anyone shed any light on the problem or at least offer me some good advice?

Many thanks,

Steve.

Have youy tried spraying the silicon lubricant they give you at services in and around it? Might help...otherwise its try your specialist/OPC...

I had a similar problem with an Audi A8, it was serviced at an Audi dealership which also had a Porsche franchise.

Conversation went along the lines (with the Audi Service Manager), I have a creaky steering..you need a new column...how much is that?...£1000+fitting+VAT...I'll let it creak

Spoke to mechanic who handed me back my car and mentioned it to him. Ah-ha he said its the leather above the steering column that just goes a bit stiff. Just rub some vaseline into it to soften it up (and he went and did it). He also mentioned that it was so common on Porsches, that Porsche even have a part number for vaseline (for this very task) on their parts list.

I had some very serious words with the service manager after that, and questioned the £2.5K I had spent with them over the past year and was it all really necessary!?!? Needless to say I have never visited that garage again and I believe now that now they are no longer an Audi dealer, but not doubt the individuals are still in the car trade.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the advice.

I will definately have a closer look tonight to see if it is just a lubrication issue around the steering wheel.

As I said originally though, it is strange how it seems to go away when we have a wet day!

Could it be that part of the steering mechanism below the car needs lubrication?

I think I will pop it up to AFN at Reading and ask them what they think....... sadly whenever the car visits them it isnt cheap ;-)

I had creaky steering on mine (2001 Boxster S) that lasted a couple of days but it went away by itself. I don't know what caused it or what made it go away.

Not sure if this is the same thing, but I had this on my boxster when i bought it 3 years ago from OPC Hatfield. It was on the offside front, and it was particularly noisy going over speedhumps etc.
If the car is switched off, and you grab the tyre and move the wheel does it creak?

We had only just bought the car, so the dealer replaced a balljoint i think. He said that as they were sealed units your couldn't squeeze in a bit of grease through a nipple etc

Let us know how you get on.

I have the same on my 996. I only really notice it when doing manoeuvres. Might give the lube trick a go myself.
