Well, I'm off to the States for a wedding next week, and as the thread title suggests I'll be needing to leave my car parked at Heathrow. Ideally I'm looking to book a hotel for one night before I fly out as well.
Do any PH'ers have recommendations or hints as to who to avoid? I know there was one dodgy outfit on watchdog last week so I'll be avoiding them!
Thanks in advance biggrin

What terminal are you flying from?

Always check the BAA prices first, by pre-booking in advance you can get some great rates!

Agreed. BAA Long Stay Parking is your best bet. You can also earn air miles too if you book through BA. Avoid any cheap off airport parking like the plague.

Flying from Terminal 3 with Virgin. Somehow Virgin and BAA both had the same prices for flights when I was booking. I've flown with Virgin before when I was younger so went with them. That was the only time I've flown transatlantic and that was a good 7 years ago. Sadly at an age now where it's not the done thing to have one's parents drop you off at the airport!

For t3 would only consider BAA prebook parking.

Personally would probably use T3 Business on the northern perimeter road, used to be known as Pink Elephant. Don't bother with the extra or the valet, meet and greet or any of those options as you have to leave your keys. Most unwise for any of the LHR car parks ime. Just pick the park it yourself and catch the bus option, very regular buses. Not that much more expensive than the long stay, and far better bus service.

An option is to use the pre book short stay which will be more expensive but if for a shortish trip and pre booked then very nice to be in your vehicle and on your way within minutes of walking out of the terminal. The only downside is that sometimes at the wrong time you can emerge from the car park into what seems like the rush hour from hell.

I have no suggestions for any of the hotel packages, ie stay plus car park. The faff of getting the hotel shuttle bus on return would put me off that tbh.

In short BAA website pre book and don't let them sell you any option where you have to leave your keys.

You'll often find they offer you an upgrade to short term which means you can crawl to and from the car-park. Just play with the online booking system a few times when you go on line and see what comes up.

My issue with short stay is that because of the greater turnover of cars in a given period the chance of someone hitting yours is greater. I always use business parking & park up down the back G, H or J.

That's a very valid point about T3 short stay, and also tend to use the back G,H or J. thumbup

Slightly off topic my flight times are such that on my usual commute I now seem to have acquired my "own space" in T5 short stay, right in a corner tucked away from everyone.

BAA run the airport, BA run the flights - very different companies wink

Dunno if any of the hotels still do this but when I flew to the states a few years back I got a hotel with 2 weeks free parking. So I stayed the one night and left the car in their car park for something like 10 days, wasn't super secure like the other long-stay places but the car was fine when I got back and they had a shuttle bus to/from the terminals.

The hotels onsite and nearby do offer this option still. Some park at the airport too.
Holidayextras.co.uk is a good start IMHO smile

Worth checking prices nearer the departure date. A couple of years ago I found a deal on short stay T2 that matched long stay. No brainer except that I had a complicated exit procedure because the system did not recognise the offer. The kiosk staff knew!

The short stay car park was pretty empty.
