Billy Drake

My Dad reckons Billy Drake wrote a book called "Fighter Pilot" (which he's got), but wasn't allowed to be credited with writing it. It just says by "a British Fighter Pilot".

I have a book called Spitfire (The Experience of a Fighter Pilot) by Squadron Leader "B.J.Ellan" which was actually written by Sqn Ldr Brian Lane but which he was required to publish anonymously.

He died during the war as a pilot of a Spitfire V which was at the time outdated, last seen giving chase to a pair of FW190s over the North Sea

I wonder how many wartime stories were published "anonymously" like his.

Billy Drake, another of those to whom we owe our freedom (let's not let this get political ) and huge respect.

'Sandy' Lane, taken at the height of the BoB..... the strain of the summer's combat showing in his face.
He was 23 years old at the time.
