was catching up on some jobs last night. tightened a loose drivers mirror what a lovely job to do,(lots of shouting, not quite kicking but nearly). I also cleaned the stepper motor which wasn't overly dirty, but can anyone tell me if the plunger is surposed to move by hand or only with electric?
thanks

you can twist off the cone and clean the spring preferably with petrol and screw back together

Err NO to that one, the cone shaft is locked by plastic key way, so if you twist it it will shear the it off. I have managed to pull the cone out with some force, and the internal rotor spins as you do, but its not guaranteed by any means. Better to get it out electrically.

I've been waiting for an opportunity to post this particularly dumb question of mine...

How do you actually remove the stepper motor? And before you answer, bear in mind that mine's got aircon.

Here's a picture of the problem:

It's that pesky aircon hose going underneath that prevents you from getting the jaws of a spanner around the stepper motor properly. I don't know how far I dare push the hose out of the way - there's a metal aircon component that runs the length of the offside rocker cover that bends downwards if you push that hose down. I really don't want to fracture anything delicate.

Has anyone done this supposedly simple job on an aircon-equipped car?

In all fairness they are usually just nipped up,wide jaw pliers will have that out with ease and at least you won't over tighten it putting back as many have found out when it's sheared eek the Mazak/chocolate type alloy is very soft scratchchin you have been warned wink

I have aircon and its a 15 second job with a large adjustable (careful not to round off the thread) clean in white spirit & rescrew with hand first then tighten with spanner slightly.

Did you not find you had to move that hose in order to get the jaws of your spanner on? And if so, how far did you move it? Perhaps I'm just being a wuss, but I really don't want to fracture any of the metal pipework - it looks like it might be delicate.

This explains it all in the section 'What's New This Month....Idling'.

As previously mentioned they are very easy to shear off, I just do mine up by hand.

I too have AC and that pipe has never got in my way.

A 32mm (or is it 34mm?) socket set does the job a treat.
