It's night riding time!

It's dark, raining, bit windy. Bikes ready, batteries charged. Jacket, sealskinz, winter gloves on.

Tell you what, some of the best rides (mountain biking or road biking) I've ever had have been on those magical clear moonlit winter nights. Not so keen on the wet and windy ones though!

Where do you ride out of interest? I ordered my new lights a few weeks ago in anticipation of some night rides but am a bit wary of using my normal routes. I normally cycle around a lot of farmland and woodland but think that using the same tracks at night while lit up like a Christmas tree may be a quick way to end up on the wrong side of a shotgun wielding landowner..

I almost had a bit of that this evening. Was halfway the other side of the forest when I realised it was quite dark, so tanked it home. Some denser parts I couldn't see anything

Can anyone recommend a front light setup for my wife, she rides a hybrid to work 7 miles all on road.

i looked into magic shine but reviews seemed to be variable. i can certainly vouch for the brightness of the light. put it this way, if you're not satisfied, i'll give you your money back!!!

Get on dealextreme and don't limit yourself to the "bike sets". There are adaptors to hold any 1"ish tube torch to the handlebars and a massive choice of batteries and outputs (and hence run times) for LED torches. Something with 200 lumens would be fine, but the claims do get a bit OTT at the higher end... I'm sure the 1200 lumen lights are putting out a real 700 - but that's loads anyway Protected lithium 18650s best for power/capacity and hardly ever burst into flame any more

Clear skies, full moon, sub-zero conditions (so the ground is solid and fast-rolling) - night rides don't get any better than that IMO. Especially when they end at the pub...
