Any route that skips the M1 roadworks Luton-MK?
Discussion
Sorry for the boring post!
I live in Hertfordshire and am starting a new job in Warwickshire on the 19th. We are moving house up there but may not get into the new place until about the 1st at the very least, which leaves me with two weeks' defecit in which I will have to commute the 80-100 miles. I'll probably kip over in a B&B one or two nights each week just to try and stay as fresh as possible.
I've run the route a few times, at the same times as I'd be commuting in, and the traffic is not too bad for the most part - the only real sticking point is the M1 roadworks which as many of you surely know are often at a complete standstill especially in rush periods.
If I could sidestep the M1, still ending up at Luton/MK at each end it would save me a great deal of hassle. Even if it was a slightly longer but mainly country road type route then my life would be a lot easier (and that bit more pleasant - it would make pretty much the entire route be country roads)
I am aware that I could go M25 then M40, which for the most part is more free-flowing, however that route is 20 miles longer (which over the space of 2 weeks will be 200 miles extra!) and in my opinion would be trading one evil for another, the M25 is no more likely to escape rush hour jams than the M1...

having a quick think, these are 2 routes you may want to consider?
i'm just struggling to remember if the m1 roadworks, finish at junction 13, or 14 of the m1, if heading north? if its j13, maybe try this route. sorry havn't been on the m1 in a while, as most of my work takes me driving abroad these days.
from welwyn, head north up the a1m, keep going, just past junction 10, next exit should be signed as the services, (1st services baldock), take this exit, down slip to roundabout, then turn left onto a507, now just follow the a 507 west, passing along the way, stotfold, henlow, clophill, and ampthill, after ampthill keep going and you'll pick up signs to get back on the m1 at junction 13, which will be fine IF the roadworks finish here? the a507 from memory is a nice drive, but may also be a training route for traffic police, in unmarked and marked cars.
1 thing to be mindfull of, is i'm pretty sure they were doing some big roadworks around the j13 area, to do with dualling the a421, and improvements to junction 13 itself.
another route that maybe worth considering, is from welwyn, get onto the a414, again heading west, follow the 414 across country, towards hemel, and to get on the m1 north, (via what would have been the old m10), head north on the m1 for a short distance, and exit at junction 9, follow sliproad to the roundabout.take 1st exit onto the a5, now, just follow the a5 all the way, and if you want stay on the a5, untill it meets with the a43 at towcester, if you turn right at the a5/a43 junction, onto the a43, a short run along here, will bring you back to the m1, at j15a, north of both milton keynes and northampton. you could if you wish, even stay on the a5, and take a different route to warwick, choice is yours?
i'm obviously not sure what these routes will be like for traffic, at the times you want to travel, but they may be worth a try? good luck, hope that helps

Take the A1 to the Baldock services exit (J10 ) and take the A507 past Stotfold, turning towards Ampthill and not going straight on to Bedford just outside Shefford then you'll have little problems and get to the M1 at junc 13 just at the end of the roadworks.
No other choice makes any sense and tbh its probably the best way to do the route form Welwyn anyway.

This. Do NOT go A414 then A5 as that will clog up big time when it hits Dunstable. The 507 is wide single carriageway so ample room for making progress along the first half of it. Roadworks at J13 are pretty much finished. No other choice makes any sense and tbh its probably the best way to do the route form Welwyn anyway.
