I managed to get a set of snow chains on ebay for not very much. They are exceeding well built and would cost a fecking fortune to buy new.

However they are a tad too small for the tyres on my landrover.

It needs new tyres so i want to buy a set of tyres that will fit

So how can i measure the chains and then work backwards to arrive at the correct tyre size.

The chains should have a tyre size on the box.
If they were very cheap they might be chains for tiny little Mini wheels, so you'll have a hard time getting them to fit on a Landy.

Lay them flat, measure them end to end.
That'll give you a circumference of the wheel they can fit.
Do some maths and work out what size tyre you need on your wheel to fit into that circumference.

You may need to use Pi.
Mmmmmm Pi.

Or just buy some suitable tyres that won't need chains wink

Yes, it's a joke biggrin

That said, if conditions do often get really bad where you live, I'd have thought serious consideration of something like these would be well worth it, and rather cool too.

Where are you going to drive that necessitates chains for a Landrover ?

Which sounds very clever but.

They didn't come in a box so that doesn't work

They are about a few inches too short

Snow chains don't go around the very outside of the tyres the side chains are normally halfway up the sidewalls.

its not that simple

Yes, the chains come up the sidewall, but (as far as I can tell) measuring the length will still give you the max circumference they will fit.
Then measure the width of the chain and you should be able to work out how much of that you want up the sidewall.

Then it's just a case of mapping those two measurements into tyre sizes to find what tyre ranges it will fit.
(which I appreciate isn't all that simple)

Try this,

It'll be a bit of trial and error entering tyre sizes in the top, but you should be able to keep trying tyre sized you get a viable circumference and width.
Then just find a local tyre shop/scrappy that will let you try the chains on for size to confirm.

Well, if you have to buy new tyres to fit the snow chains, why not just buy winter/snow tyres?

What size tyres are currently on the LR?

There are only so many possibilities for a LR tyre size-wise so knowing what is currently a bit too big and then using a tyre calculator should give you the answer. Also what model and wheelbase is it?

I am buying genral grabber AT2 which are as close you can get to a decent winter tyre easily in landrover sizes

But occasionally i need a bit more traction

Enough about your sex life, can we keep on topic please?

Have you run the General grabber in winter? Are theyndecent in snow? I would imagine the lack of siping would be an issue.

Just another thought.
Do the chains not fit in length or width?

If they are too short and you want to buy lower profile tyres then you'll have a smaller rolling circumference on the tyre and your speedo will be wrong.
(I have no idea how much impact it will have though)

If it was me, I'd just buy a set of chains that fitted my tyres rather than the other way round.
It seems a bit of false economy otherwise.

Its a landrover

Speedo accuracy is terrible at best

The tyres need replacing anyway so no extra cost on getting the right size

Easy option is ask mates / neighbours to try them on their cars to find the size.
