A report today says they are more likely to be obese, depressed or smokers than those of 11 other nations including Australia, the US, China, Brazil, Mexico and New Zealand.
A worrying 35% of middle-aged Brits are classed as obese, almost twice the world average, while 27% have depression against an average of 17%, says Bupa International, which surveyed 13,000 people.
Bupa’s Dr Sneh Kemkah blamed our drinking culture, adding: “It is mainly down to lifestyles. The mid-40s is a time when the excesses of youth catches up with you.”

Way to go oldies! UK, UK, UK, UK.
As ever, with any comparison of health status across different countries, you're rarely comparing like with like.
If everyone measured the same proportion of people in the same way in the same healthcare system you could start comparing. But we don't even really know how many obese people there are in the UK (we make an generally make an educated guess through extrapolating survey info or incomplete GP data) -and the NHS is one of the most wide ranging intensive data collecting health systems on the planet.
Obese people are fat but often not ill in the early years, so they don't enter the health system to be measured.
So take all of this with a pinch of salt. And a slice of bacon. With yummy cheese.

My dad's 58, 19 stone and can get depressed. I fear he is not long for this planet, he just won't move his arse and get some exercise.
He's a coach driver so spends all day sat down.
The problem with professional drivers and excess weight can be sleep apnoea. The fat tissue around the lower face/jaw/neck interferes with the airway and it can block off briefly causing you to partially wake up and gasp for breath. This regularly disturbed sleep is obviously bad news for long, boring, drives.
He's a coach driver so spends all day sat down. It's not easy for drivers, sat down all day with little choice of healthy food. The good news is that taking exercise has an immediate effect and even if you're overweight, it has a protective effect around cardio-metabolic risk. Fat but fit people (half hour a day, or 4 hours a week, or whatever) live longer than skinny, unfit people. Exercise also has a pretty immediate effect on mood too.
Its all about finding the right exercise, getting over that initial hurdle. A charity hike, bike ride, golf, outdoor volunteering etc suits the older gents without them being worried about pulling a pair of shorts and trainers on...
