It's quite something, the level of detail you can get when zooming from a long distance is impressive, wonder what kit they used for this!? I'm surprised it's legal, perfectly able to view reg plates, into peoples windows etc...

There are motorised panoheads out there typically Merlin/Papywizard robotic pano head or here

Google "Gigapan" and then drill into the results for some examples of enormous panoramas.

I think the current record for the worlds biggest photo is a gigapan shot in Dubai by a guy called Gerald, there was something in the press here a while back.

The 80 was nearly a year ago so I would imagine that it has been beaten by now. Probably by someone with a purpose built rig shooting 6 Phase One 65+ digital backs and saving the files in a mobile datacentre that was flown to the some super computer location where the bespoke stitching software worked 24/7 for a month and delivered an image where each and every insect within 20 miles can be identified and sexed.

I'll be impressed when someone produces a perfectly exposed and stitched night shot of the West coast of America, preferably using 5 million iPhone6 prototypes inadvertently mislaid in bars by testers. Now that would be a story ...

Could it be one chopper that happened to be moving in the same direction as the camera between shots?
