The Forum Restaurant, on the rooftop of the Forum Hotel (next to Nero's forum). Very, VERY "old school" silver service but the Chateaubriand is to die for and the restaurant has a view over the Colosseum. Everybody will tell you to go down to the restaurant district, Piazza Novona, but I find the restaurants there very samey and many are looking to rip off the unsuspecting tourist. Having said that, Il Convivio is an International restaurant near Piazza Navona & the Pantheon and was very good. Imago and Il Palazzetto on Del Popolo near the Spanish Steps are are OK and have a good variety of dishes. I would recommend Quinzi & Gabrieli, close to the Pantheon, if your preference is seafood. Have a great time, it's a marvellous city!

Agree about piazza navona. Absolutely wonderful area after dark. You wont want to eat italian food in britain ever again when you come back though.

I'm driving down from London this weekend for a week in Rome followed by a week in Tuscany, I've been suggested the following from locals that I work with;

· Osteria La Gensola – P.zza della Gensola 15 . Tel: +39-06-5816312 (Cost: Med/High) – Must Reserved

· Al Pompiere – V. S.M. calderari 38 (Closed to the Ghetto) – Cost: Low/Medium

· Osteria Giggetto Portico D’Ottavia – (In the Ghetto) – Cost: Med/High – Must Reserved

· Da Remo Pizzeria – P.zza di Santa Maria Liberatrice 44 – Cost: Low/Medium. No turists. No possibility to reserve. It is good for a post event in the evening

· Er Grottino der traslocatore – L.go delle 7 Chiese 2 – Tel.: +39-06-514-1261. (Cost: Low/Med) – Very typical atmosphere. In Garbatella neighbourhood. No tourists. Must reserved.

Hopefully I'll be able to check these out next week and report back on my findings.
