Would an Audi S4 Avant with say 116k on an 04 plate be dramatically more expensive to run than a BMW E46 330i petrol Touring of a similar age/milage? I know ones a V8 and the other a straight 6 but is the difference huge?

I ask as I really want an estate but there aren't many decent 330's around but quite a few S4's.

I suspect it's because people with 330i tourings are keeping theirs, and there's a reason for that

That's a B6, not a B5. The B5 was the twin turbo V6 that was produced up to 2001.
I'd imagine the B6 would be a fair chunk more expensive. Worse on fuel, AWD system and more things to potentially go wrong.

Good call. Avoid the S4 then?

No, there's nothing inherrantly wrong with them but you're comparing a 3litre with a 4.2 quattro, the main difference being fuel consumption which is a slight bugbear incase you hadn't noticed.

Two quite different cars imo. The 330i is quick, the S4 will be much quicker. I had an S6 with the same V8 in it and it was an awesome engine. 14mpg round the town was a bit hard to swallow as was the cost of cambelt changes at over £1000 a go.

We used to have a B6 S4 Avant. A truly awesome car, but it really did like a drink!!

Wansn't just the super unleaded my V8 liked either. It had quite a liking for Castrol edge.
