I know I'll get rebuffed for this but I was wondering if anybody has seen or heard of any fuel economy competitions over here in the UK?

There are a few about in the states, but I've only seen one in the UK & that's for fleet operators apparenty

I'm sure I remember a few years back someone like Autocar arranged one here. The results were worked out as a % above the manufacturer claimed figure to find the winner I think as there were things like Subarus, BMWs and I seem to recall a Viper or Noble being there.

What sort of competition?

Shell run their mileage marathon but I get the impression that isn't what you're talking about.

Competitions for who can get the greatest miles per gallon figure, taken as a percentage above manufacturer quotes.

Ahh, not heard of anything along those lines. I would have thought that just matching manufacturers claims would be a challenge in itself.

I'd love to see anyone exceed the claims for the focus ST, short of taking the body off hehe

TBH, i don't see the point? if the aim is to use as little fuel as possible, surely just sitting on the sofa watching telly is a winner? (lets face it, pointlessly driving around with the aim of proving "how economical" you can drive is a little bit silly isn't it ?? ;-)

Not thought about it like that, but very true.

Used to be called Economy Runs. My old man worked in the motor industry for various manufacturers and was (in his day) at the forefront of emmissions technology.

He's long retired now but drives for Team Honda in these Economy Runs in NZ, Aus and the US. A lot of the manufacturers enter these with their latest hybrid technology to get data on real world driving and also it's good PR as all the cars are logo'd up.

Haven't heard of this kind of event in the UK though.

I did an event for charity... drove from BMW UK HQ in Bracknell to John O'Groats in a MINI Coooper Diesel on one tank of fuel (40 litres).

We made it, but the range went to - - - around 13 miles from the finish line!

676 miles.
