Hi there,

I've been looking on ebay and seen some very tempting and very cheap Car accessories and was wanting to know if anyone had bought any of them and what they thought.
I drive a Jag x-type 2.5 V6, which likes a drink. For anything from £1 to £20 some sellers are advertising fuel saver magnets, which clip to the fuel line and apparently save money and fuel by ‘charging the fuel molecules’. Is this too good to be true? Has anyone tried them out and what results have they seen? Are there any side issues, e.g. with the electrics?
Sticking with the saving fuel and improving performance, there are lots of air filters for sale, are any of them any good or worthwhile.
With real brembo breaks being expensive to buy and maintain, for £20 some calliper covers seem a bargain to hide my tatty standard callipers. Has anyone got any? Have they fitted okay? Has they been any overheating issues? Etc...
All replies grateful received, particularly from Jag owners!

They don't do anything. You'll waste you're money by buying those.

*runs troll-o-meter over post* I'm not sure about this one...
Just in case, the magnet fuel saver thing is snake-oil, pure and simple. Second, you get what you pay for, up to a point. I drive a jag, as it happens and I use jag parts (except for things like wiper blades and screen wash).
No experience on the brake calliper covers, I am afraid. I fear they might look rather tacky...

An X-type owner thinking of such mods? Seriously?

With every web bargain or offer that looks like a bargain remember the old adage:

'If it looks too good to be true it probably is too good to be true'.

If a company could actually offer a product that really saved consumption they would not need to advertise it. Word of mouth would create a huge market all by itself.

Ergo: they do not work.

I would stick to genuine parts on a Jag.

surely the manufacture would fit them as standard if a 2 quid magnet could boost fuel efficiency.

Whilst I obviously agree in this case, you could argue the same about the "remaps" that everyone seems to think give better everything with no drawbacks on this site.

Listen. You know there are certain times you look back to a point in your life and you think "OMG, WTF was I thinking?" This is one of those times. Stop. Step away from eBay. Change your driving style to improve your MPG and get some axle stands so you can tidy up your calipers one Sunday. Engineers probably spent hundreds of hours designing the X-Type's air intake system. Do you really think a £20 K&N wannabe from China can better it?

If I start an eBay listing offering you magic beans that if eaten will give you a guaranteed extra 30 mpg would you buy them? they'll only cost £100.

Seriously, as with most things, if it was true, the OEM would have done it first.
